My son has a terrible congestion, phlegm, he is sneezing every 5 minutes and coughing a lot... it has being 10 days (he was getting better and got a virus again :()... he is taking something for cough and sinus that the pedi gave me (not antibiotic) ... Anyway... my questions is: Do you have any idea how can I help him going thru the congestion??? Home remedy??? I'm giving him several baths a day, lots of fluids, put some books on the bottom of the mattress where the head is situated (although it doesn't work because he moves a lot at night), mist in his nose every time he lets me do it... and I do not have a humidifier... He is so miserable... and I started to feel sick today :(
Thanks
N.

Get a humidifier - they are very helpful. Also - this works even though it sounds crazy. At night - slather his feet in Vicks vapor rub and cover w/ socks... helps the coughing. Also, you could try to cut dairy as it adds to the mucus problem. Hang in there. it's no fun.. poor little guy

We have a cool mist humidifier, Vicks brand, that you can put these little vapor pads into it that makes the air mentholated or whatever it is, that helps breathe easier. This really helps my son. Also, use Vicks (baby) vapor rub on his chest and bottoms of his feet when he tries to sleep (this sounds weird, but works wonders on coughs for some reason too!)

Would he tolerate a saline nasal spray? I know my kids never would (even know at 5 and almost 7 it's a battle) but it will help to get some of it out. Also, is the drainage clear or is it is colored? If it is clear, keep doing what you are doing. If it is greenish in color and thick, it may be time for an antibiotic.

And I hope you feel better!

I also second (or is it 3rd) the Vick's on the bottom of his feet. Slather it on, put some socks on and you're good to go. He can do that all day. For some reason, it really helps with the cough.

I hope he feels better soon!

You should take him back to his pediatrician he may need antibiotics at this point. Maybe you should wait on the bathing until he feels better. Humidifier works great with congestion and warm liquids helps decrease the cough, no dairy to decrease phlegm. Good Luck

The last two times my son had cold and congestion , doc told M. I can't do anything much since he is only a little over a year old. It was horrible to see him go through that and it ended in ear infection both times. I had tried saline mist but he hates it. This time I decided not to sit and watch and have tried Vicks vapopads in our vicks humidifier, it's been helping a lot. Also Vicks babyrub on his chest and back, he still has a cold but hasn't gotten as bad as before. I liked the idea of slathering vicks on feet. That's what I am going to do next.

I agree with using the baby chest rub, I have used the Target brand with a lot of success. It's the eucalyptus oil, it's very soothing and helps them to breathe more easily. I've used it all day long, not just at night, when it got really miserable. Good luck, hope your baby feels better soon!

Prop up the top of his crib with phone books, or such...it will help him at night.

With an 18 month old, I would really consider spending $25 on a cool mist humidifier. And I've seen them at thrift stores for a lot less. It will help him.

Des he like soup or broth? The warm liquids will loosen it up a bit.
