Hello ladies,

I have 2 questions about my almost 1 year-old son.

1. When did you stop givng your baby rice cereal & baby fruits and veggies? My little guys seems to prefer the real deal now, but I'm not sure if he is too young to switch over completely.

2. When did you switch your little one over to 1 nap per day instead of 2?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

My DD never liked baby food at all, so at 7 months, she was breastfed and ate nothing but table food.
She went down to one nap at about 15 months I think.

If he is ready to change to real food... GO FOR IT!!!! Make sure he is not allergic and keep with the 3-day rule for new food....
Books say they switch to 1 nap at 16 months... My son did it at 13 months... You will notice that he will refuse to nap and will be full of energy instead of fussy....
Always try to follow his cues and don't rush him....
Good luck N.

Oh certainly if your little one prefers real food, make the switch! My kiddo's never really ate cereal or jarred food. So whenever your babe is ready...

Naps well...I am apparently a nap flunky. For the past 2 days my 15 month old is trying to go w/ no nap! :(
So again when they are ready...this is a natural age to go to one.

Hope that helps! Just follow your baby's lead. :)

I think my dd was about 18 months when she went to one nap a day. She started trying to take out her afternoon nap and I wasn't having it so I took out her morning one and that worked out pretty well.

When she started having enough teeth, I started giving her cut up fruits and stuff instead of baby, I think she was probably about a year when we stopped buying them all together and let her go to regular food, just really cut up.

If your son is ready for all table food, and moving away from the baby food, he is ready! Just be sure to cook veggies well and cut everything into small pieces.

My son is 15 mo. and still naps twice a day; however I think he is beginning to transition. Again, I think when they are ready!

My babies never had rice cereal, they just had breastmilk from the tap and whatever foods the rest of us were eating (cut and mushed up) when they showed interest in food. My son was almost 6 months old when he wanted real food and my daughter was barely 5 months. They never ate jarred baby foods. For the naps--my son switched to 1 nap around 13 months (he was always a horrible sleeper and I was relieved to only have to fight him to nap once/day! So maybe he wasn't completely ready, but i sure was!). My daughter is 11 months and still takes 2-2 hour naps a day. I don't think she'll give up her morning nap for a while. She is exhausted and fussy after being awake for a couple of hours in the morning. Congratulations on your boys' upcoming birthday!

You can switch him off of baby food now. He can eat small pieces of whatever you eat.

1. Once I felt he was ready- sounds like he is if he prefers the real deal. Just make sure he is getting some sort of grain during the day still.

2. When my son was starting to get later in his sleepiness - like instead of 9am he was getting tired at 11. Also, when his nap would be longer- like instead of an hour, he would go two or three. So, I would hold him out til 12 (even though he was tired at 11) and then put him down and he would sleep for 2 or three hours. So, basically when I saw signs of him not being tired in the morning, I started one afternoon nap.

I stopped feeding my daughter the mushy food once she was able to start chewing. I still make sure they were all chunks, and progressively they go larger as she got better. I'd still puree somethings that would be impossible for her to chew, but everything else, spaghetti, bananas, green beans, etc, were given to her in small pieces.

And for the nap, I had a set time of "no naps after 3", and if she couldn't fit 2 naps in before then, then she only got her one. Often she'd just not be tired enough by say 10am to go down for an hour, so I just stopped trying and only tried to get her to nap after her lunch at noon. She was probably 10 months old when she went to only 1 nap, mind you the nap would be from 12-2 or so. She stills naps then 95% of the time, no naps past 2 though! Or she won't sleep at 8.

I think I gave my daughter rice/grain cereals for about a month or two because she didn't like it. I switched her to real food (mashed/purreed) at about 7 months. She hated baby food, but loved the real stuff.
I think my daughter was about 1 1/2 when we went to just 1 nap.

My son didn't switch to one nap per day until 16 months but I have a couple foster babies who switched to one nap at 11 months and 8 months. It depends on the kid and what works for them. All of my kids sleep really well at night, usually 12+ hours and they take 2-3 hour naps so maybe that is why they only need one nap. I usually start offering finger foods between 8-9 months and once they do really well with them they eat mostly what we eat, usually by 9-10 months.

We've never done much baby food with our kids. There's no real nutritional difference between jarred food and "the real deal", so the only concern would be the ability to gum/chew his food. Since you're saying he prefers the real stuff, it seems that's not an issue, so I'm not sure where your concern lies.

Baby cereal does tend to be iron-fortified, but so are most regular cereals. If you do vitamins, there's no reason for even that to be a concern.

I'm no help on naps. Our kids sleep when they're tired. (Though that obviously does come with its own troubles, lol.)
