Allergy to Fresh Fruit and Veggies?

My niece says she's allergic to any fresh fruits and vegetables. She says she gets drymouth and a red rash inside her mouth and can't eat any fruits or vegis not cooked. She's also allergic to all tree nuts. And she's 11 so she won't eat anything "weird."

The problem is that I'm a vegetarian and her diet clashes 100% with mine, which is dominantly fresh fruits and vegis-- I eat them fresh to preserve all the nutrients and taste. I don't eat meat, and am lactose-intolerant. I load up all my food with nuts for the protein etc. I'm missing from the meat.

My niece is staying with me this week. Has anyone ever heard of her allergy? Does it have a name? I once met a woman who was anaphelactic (sp?) and she had a similar problem. Does my niece have that? Any ideas for how I can cook for the 2 of us? Leaving out nuts is simple enough-- I can just cook them separately for myself. And I can cook vegetables. But other than apple pancakes, what do I do with cooked fruit? Most of my recipes are "weird" by her standards too-- middle eastern, creole, jamaican... haha I love my niece but this is gonna be one challenging week! She'll have to deal with my food to some extent but there's no point in killing the poor girl.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the advice! We don't serve meat in my house; that would be like asking an Orthodox Jew to cook pork for a guest... it's just ridiculous. However, I hadn't thought about vegetarian meat, and about switching in and out condiments. One mom (the one who lives with a vegan) suggested tacos and other dishes with toppings that you can just serve separately for a make-your-own meal. Brilliant! Kids loooove that stuff! So tomorrow night I'm making couscous with onions and thyme, and each condiment will be served separately, and some will be fresh for me, and others cooked for my niece. Taco night will be the following night, then we'll do crepes... why didn't I think of that? You moms are so smart. Thank you so much!

My son has the same allergies. Have you talked to her mother to find out what she normally eats and drinks?

She's not allergic to everything...just the things you choose to mostly eat. :>)

Pastas, sandwiches where you can each choose your own toppings, canned fruit is cooked and works for my son (and convenient). I'm assuming you wouldn't force her to eat vegetarian or skip the milk and cheese while she's at your house. Though I think if her nut allegy is life-threatening, as most nut allergies are, you should consider limiting or eliminating them from your cooking while she's there, or at least the ones she's most allergic.

There is a lot of great advise here, but I just wanted to stress what one of the other moms said about nuts. Depending on the severity of your niece's allergy to nuts, keep them out of sight for the week. Just the smell alone could possibly send her to the hospital, or getting some traces of nuts in her food could be life threatening. Please be careful!
Enjoy your week :)

My husband has this allergy too... so she very well may have it too. But for him, he developed it later on in life. He talked with an allergist and they say it's actually from the pollen of the fruit/vegetable. He gets allergies when certain plans bloom so that made sense.

I would talk to her parents and see what she can eat. She is a guest in her home so I would try to make dishes that can be good for everyone. Like tacos are easy for everyone to make how they would like them. You can make some taco meat for her yet still keep yours vegetarian. Spaghetti is another meal that can be vegetarian but still enjoyed by all. Mac and cheese, chili, pasta salad, veggie burgers, perogis(sp?), grill cheese and soup, etc. Trust me it is possible. Have fun. She's only there for a week so every meal does not have to be the perfectly healthy meal. You would not believe how easy so many meals are easy to change to accomendate vegetarians and meat eatters. Take it from someone who lives with a vegan!!!

My husband has this allergy. Any fresh fruit or veggies that he eats makes his throat, mouth and lips itch. His lips also get red and he can get hives. As long as they're cooked he's pretty much fine. It still bothers him a little, but not as bad. He takes Allegra every day to help with this. I agree with the last poster. Look at cookbooks together and try and come up with some recipes that are for both of you. Take her shopping with you. It's good bonding time. Have fun!!

Wow, is it too much to ask to meet her halfway? I am going to guess that you are appreciative when people are respectful of your beliefs regarding vegetarianism and I bet it is really nice when they accommodate your diet and give you vegetarian dish options; shouldn't you do the same for her? I'm not saying bring home a side of beef for the girl, but why not go grocery shopping together so she at least has some say in the matter. Is making the week miserable for her just to preserve your beliefs really worth it?
