My 5 mo gets hives on the sides of his temples when he eats apples and pears. He LOVED the first taste of these two fruits, but has hives within 5 minutes of ingesting apples or pears. Has anyone else experienced hives with these fruits?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am not giving solids as a primary source of nutrition! My ped recommended the exposure to baby food because my son was the size of a 9 month old at 4.5 months. We give him a different food for 3-5 days prior to moving on to something else. If there is a reaction to a food, we discontinue that food. He normally only eats 3 - 5 bites off the baby spoons and is able to push the food to the back of his mouth to swallow. He has been interested in real food visually since he was 3 months. No I did not give him food until the dr said to. I am not a first time mom and know my child. My question was for the allergy knowledge.

I did contact the ped today who recommended stopping the apples and pears which I had already done.

I am going to say it and know that you will ignore it anyway.

A 5 month old baby is not supposed to be eating foods yet. You are setting him up to not be satisfied with formula until he's a year old. He's going to be wanting to eat nothing but food and he will be starving for nutrition. Formula has complete nutrition. Baby food has nearly ZERO nutrition in it. It is not for supplying food to your child.

They expect you to be giving your baby formula FIRST then giving tiny bits of baby food to teach them to chew and swallow, that's all it's for, not for FOOD. Formula is their food and every bite of food you give your child fills their tummy so they won't want formula and therefor they get nothing but flavored goo inside and starve so they eat more food. Then mommy thinks they are wonderful eaters but the truth is they are starving for nutrients.

Please back off the food for a couple of months and let the baby get old enough to be eating table food and just skip the baby food all together.

My DH is allergic to apples, pears, & all stone fruit. He gets hives, then breathing problems if he eats them.

Sorry to hear your baby is reacting with hives. I'd stop giving those foods for now. Maybe try again after he's a year or so old. Kids can outgrow food allergies if they stop being exposed to the allergen. My daughter outgrew her allergy to citrus fruits. Took till she was 5 though.

Good luck!

DD gets a rash with apple. Fortunately she isn't allergic to pear, but she cannot have those applepear things. Too close to apple. If your son is experiencing a reaction, stop feeding them to him. Read juice boxes and juice labels carefully, as apple and pear are very common. I got some white grape juice (our go-to juice) for DD and realized it had apple in it. Many fruit snacks have apple in them, etc.

Frankly, I would stop with the solids for another month or so and try again. It could also be that he's not ready for them and that could also be a factor. He'll be fine on breastmilk or formula right now.

Stop feeding the fruits.
Your baby is 5 months?
For the 1st year of life, breastmilk or formula is a baby's primary, source of nutrition . "Solids" is not as nutritionally dense, as Formula or breastmilk.
This is also per our Pediatrician.

Baby does not have to eat yet nor any fruits.
