When I eat pineapples, my mouth feels raw and hurts for a day. When I eat oranges, my lips sting and feel swollen and my mouth feels raw. Does anyone else have this problem?

What can I do next?

Fortunately my food allergies are different but yes that will happen when you're allergic to pineapple and oranges or when you're sensitive to the acid in them.

I am allergic to almonds (this is new in the past year), pecans, watermelon, banana's, raw potatoes, etc....the odd thing is I could eat them at certain times of the year and have no swelling or itching.

This describes me to a T.

Good luck with this! I always keep a bottle of Liquid Benadryl in my purse or some of those little Benadryl packets with the twist off top. My hubby has allergies and carries an Epi-pen. I worry when we travel that I might have an allergic reaction. I end up not eating or drinking very much when we end up going out of town.

Being prepared just in case is a good thing.

Yes for the pineapples, no about the oranges. When I eat raw pineapple (cooked is very different) my tongue will swell so much it won't fit in my mouth! I was therefore not surprised when I had food allergy testing, pineapple showed up. There are two easy types of food allergy testing to do - IgG blood testing and IgE skin scratch testing. The IgE one you do at an allergist's office and the IgG one can require a blood draw, but Food Safe has an IgG test you can do with just drops of blood from a finger prick.

You may find that canned or cooked pineapple does not do the same thing to you. One of my kinds reacts terribly to raw celery but not at all to cooked celery. Cooking often will change the proteins - denature what we are reacting to.

Sounds like it!

However:

Empircle Test:

Eat one, then take some Benedryl. If the burning/raw/swollen stops and goes away, yup. Histamine response. Allergy.

I am from Hawaii and we have Pineapples here all the time.
Kids grow up eating it.

Pineapples... are KNOWN for creating a tingly itchy mouth, after eating it... for some. It is actually very, common.

For some the allergic reaction is minor.
For others it can be a swollen throat and face. Hence breathing difficulties.

Pineapple, (and Kiwi fruit) have enzymes and other things in it that can "burn" the mouth.
For some.
If allergic to Pineapple, you may also be allergic to things in that family of plants/food.

My daughter is allergic to Kiwi fruit. She gets the same sensation as you did, with pineapple. However, some people get VERY serious reactions to Kiwi. And it is a potentially serious reaction and swelling that can occur.
But, because she is allergic to Kiwi, when she had surgery once, they Doctors need to know that, because there are other things in the Kiwi family of foods/plants, that could cause her a cross reaction. ie: Latex etc.
But cross-reactions are not common.
But it may happen.
But typically, well, my daughter is only allergic to Kiwi.

My Dad was allergic to Pineapple. And Mango.
But he still ate it. His was not a severe reaction.
All he did was rinse his mouth with water, after eating pineapple. And that worked for him.

For my daughter, her initial reaction to Kiwi was very very slight. But the more she ate it, the worse her reactions got. Once she got pain, we stopped letting her eat it. It was among her favorite fruits.
Her Doctor said Kiwi allergy is very serious.
Life threatening for some.

When I was young, oranges made my lips numb.
Walnuts and bananas made my mouth itch inside.
Ive since grown out of both of those.
I'd guess it is an allergic reaction...
It never stopped me from eating the stuff, I'm glad it finally went away tho.
