Allergies? - Brookfield,IL

My 18-month old son had 6 double ear infections in 5 months (May-September). We took it upon ourselves to seek out an ENT to make sure his hearing (and therefore speech development) wasn't being affected. Apparently my son had fluid behind his eardrum that was not able to drain, so he was hearing things like we would if were under water: you can hear, but not clearly. Not only that, but with the fluid stuck there, once he was done with one round of antibiotics, bacteria would begin to grow again and he'd get another ear infection. So the solution was to have tubes put in his ears, which would allow that fluid to drain. Now the ENT was clear about the fact that tubes will not prevent ear infections, but that they should drastically cut down on the number of them.

We had 2 good months with no ear infections. Until my son got an ear infection at the end of November (the first time it's only been in one ear!). We finished his antibiotics earlier this month...and now he's got another double-ear infection! I know the tubes are still in, and I know they're not clogged. So it's not that there's stagnant fluid in his ears.

I'm obviously concerned about the reason he continues to get such frequent ear infections. I'm wondering if he might have allergies...but my son's pediatrician hasn't even mentioned this possibility. We asked her about it in September with the infection before he had the tubes put in, and she dismissed it. Nothing has been mentioned since. Should we again take it upon ourselves to seek out a doctor - an allergist, this time - to look at my son? (And if so, can any of you recommend a great one in the LaGrange, IL area?) Or should we trust that his doctor would refer us to someone if she thought it was a problem?

Definitely, go and check out all of your concerns. I always say you can never be to careful. Remember Dr.'s are practicing medicine. They see hundreds of babies and children and unfortunately they do diagnose sometime on a experience basis. I would say definitely don't ignore the fact that it may be from allergies.

Good luck, T. P.

Hi P. , My 3 year son had a min of 2 ear infections for the 15mnths , his ped said he would out grow it ( i have a new ped now ) So I took him to a great ENT out of Res . Danny had fluid just like your little one we tried 1 round of meds and that didnt work so he had tubes put in 1 1/2 yrs ago and I can tell you it made a world of difference he has only had 1 minor ear infection because he took his ear plugs out and got some water in there . The tubes have since fallen out and we have had no problems . The procedure is very simple and he was in surgrey all of 7mins . Please dont allow this to continue to long . regarding allergies try clartin over the counter and see if that helps if so then seek your own allergist or go with a referral from a friend . I dont live that close to you but should you look for another ENT .Dr Vukas out of Res is awesom with kids .

Good Luck and Happy Holidays to your family
K.

my 3 yr old had constant ear infections for 12months before they would put the tubes in, simce then he has had only 1 infection. his dr. tried allergy meds 1st thinking it was a seasonal thing, (not the case). dr. said there is not an accuraut food allergy test at such a young age, i think it becomes more accrate at 8yrs? not sure, you probably coud try elimanating certain foods to see. good luck

All I can say is trust your gut. My 10 month old son had questionable stools (looking back on it, it was diareah)and atopic dermititis pretty much from the time he was born up to when he started eating solids. His pediatrician tested his stools for blood, and since there wasn't any, ruled out a milk allergy and said it was "normal." So I continued to eat dairy (I was breastfeeding him). She also said to keep putting on the hydrocortizon 1% since it was clearing his skin up and we listened to her. Well, we started supplementing with cow's milk formula at about 5 months and a few weeks later he developed hives. At that point they referred us to an allergist and my son tested positive for a severe allergy to milk. Now I am kicking myself thinking that I should have done something earlier when I suspected there was a problem rather than listening to my doctor. My point is, get a second, third, or even fourth opinion. What will it hurt? And your questions will be answered. We are in the middle of switching allergists and will be seeing Dr. Mary Tobin at Rush at the beginning of JAnuary -- I've heard she is very good. I think she may also see patients in Oak Park if that is better for you. Also, I have read that an allergy to milk can cause ear infections. In addition, there is a lot of literature regarding the affects of anitbiotics on allergies -- they make them worse, so if it is an allergy, I would be careful with the antibiotics as well.

Hi P.,
My son has bad allergies and has since he was about 9 mos.
He's now 14 and has to take zyrtec daily but he's never had an ear infection.
His symptoms were sneezing alot, itchy eyes and nose.
When he ate foods and got a bad rash we knew he was allergic
to those foods.
