My family and I were at a household with two dogs. One dog a short haired labrador and the other long haired golden retriever and we dont know if he had a reaction to the dogs, hay fever or possibly food. I had noticed that as soon as we got there the dogs were all over him and he got some redness on his face. Then about and hour later his eyes became very swollen and red. He was sneezing a lot with a runny nose. He didnt have any swelling of the lips or tongue so I doubted a reaction to food. Could it be hay fever and the dogs? Has this happened to anyone else? We gave him benedryl and 3 hrs later it started up again so we of course left. His attitude was normal, up running around and playing. Just irritated with his eyes and itchness. Any advice????

What can I do next?

I'm sure it was the dogs. My husband and I are the same. Not all dogs or all cats do this to us. I think it depends on how often they are bathed? I've heard it is the dander we are allergic to? Anyway, even with our two dogs, although I'm fine around them, if I pet them, then scratch my eye, my eye will get red and itchy. Short haired cats seem to bring out the allergies in both my hubby and I. We got asthmatic around them, yet we had a long haired cat for 17 years that didn't bother us.

Hope that helps,
M.

Yes!!!

My son has horrible hay fever allergies, and he gets the same symptoms. His pediatrician said not to bother with Benedryl when we're in the thick of it. My son takes Claritin when we are going to be outside for long periods of time and it's windy or during allergy seasons. Claritin comes in non-drowsy formula that lasts 24 hours, so I'm not constantly having to give him meds.

I would talk to your son's doc when you see him next, and ask him for recommendations of what he thinks will work best for your son.

My son developed allergy induced asthma, and not often, but sometimes I have to give him albuterol in an inhaler when he weezes.

Good luck and good job with the instincts.

hes probably allergic to the pet dander. i would reccamend taking him to the dr and having them draw blood to do an allergy test. until then just give him the benadryl to keep him comfortable. his dr may prescribe him an allergy med. my daughter has allergies asthma and eczema her cheeks will break out then her nose starts to run and she starts to cough (because it irritates her asthma). we give her benadryl or zyrtec (what her dr gave her) along with an inhaler. shes 18 months old. hope this helps good luck!

Most likely it was a reaction to the dogs. I am alergic to cats and get that same reaction. Runny nose, sneezing and runny eyes. It feels like a sudden cold. If it is too bad, I have to leave the house, change my close and take a shower to get all the allergens off me. This helps me get over it faster. I have been alergy tested and I am alergic to the cat dander and their fur so I get it double bad. If I am visiting where there are cats, as long as I stay away from them and their owners have recently vacuumed and dusted, it doesn't affect me so much. If these are good friends, maybe they can put the dogs out while your son is there. It is a little harder to ask them to vacuum and dust but if you explain that your son is alergic to the dogs, hopefully they will comply.

Just make sure his alergy is not bringing on any breathing difficulties! Check if he is weezing, ect. If that is the case, you should definately check with your doctor.
