I'm looking for an air freshener for my entry way. In the entry way we have our washer/dryer, cat food/water, cat litter box and garbage. Can you tell what room is gated off from the baby?? So I don't want it smelling like Bath & Body when people come in, but I do want a nice scent that covers up smells like litter box and fresh poopie diaper :P I have one outlet I could use as I think there are air fresheners like that. I don't have any shelf/counter space...other than the top of the dryer. Also, it can't be so strong that it gives me a headache. Air fresheners are so expensive that I don't want to just try whatever. Thanks!!

So What Happened?

I know it's the chemicals that give me a headache; I wish we could afford to be Melaleuca members again because I'd definitely be purchasing their air fresheners. When my little guy is pooping up to 3 times a day it's just not possible to take out the garbage every time. And I'm pregnant so hubby has the litter changing duties and with working 50 hours a week it's not on the top of his list of things to do. I think the Citrus Magic might be the best place to start. Thanks :)

I took each poopy diaper and put it into a plastic grocery bag, tied it and put it on the porch till I could make it to the big can outside. I never kept them in the house.

Can't help you with the air freshener as I can't be around them.

I believe there are reasons air fresheners give you a head ache. For me they often turn my stomach and for my little one she has an asthma attack if it is too strong. I believe all that 'stuff' has too many chemicals, which we don't need.

Is your cat on a schedule? Make it a point at nap time to clean the litter box and take out the trash and then again after dinner.

I know it is hard to be on a schedule with little ones around, but think of your daycare centers. They have to be on schedule or the parents would think there were cleanliness issues, although it may not be. A home could be spotless, but a poopy diaper sitting in the trash could really taint the view.

I think smelling the chemical coverup of an air freshener is even worse than normal house smells. I'd keep the litter and garbage cleaned regularly and spritz with peppermint oil when the smells start to build up. You can get peppermint oil in a small bottle at any natural food store.

I use all Melaleuca products in my home. The linen mist products work great, and Sol-U-Mel is also fabulous for stains & smells. They do not make a plug in product. No headaches, as they do not use any chemicals in their products.

I agree that they don't really work and are usually are too strong. They aren't really recommended from a health perpective either. The essential oils (peppermint, citrus, eucalyptus etc) are healthier, more effective and cheaper in the long run.

You might need to find some way to tuck it away but I put a Citrus Magic on the shelf in the closet where the kids keep their stinky shoes and it's made SUCH a difference. You can get Citrus Magic in citrus or linen scent. Buy them in the grocery store. I also have one in DD's room since she is still in pull ups at night and we have a diaper pail.

I have to say when I walk in a house and smell any air freshener the first thing I think is what are the covering up.

What I would suggest is cleaning the litter box, taking out the garbage and then spraying some Febreze before people come over.

We use Scentsy (https://scentstand.scentsy.us/Scentsy/Home) they are wickless candles and have so many amazing scents that you should be able to find what works for you. I am not a consultant.....just someone who was introduced to the product and loves them!

I ordered a soy candle from an all-natural company. It does not contain chemicals nor is it dipped in fragrance.

If a candle is not feasible (my kids are older), I would check at your local health food store. Our local health food store carries many non-toxic options

I used to buy from Melaleuca, too !

YoungLiving.com might have what you are looking for. I don't know if there is a minimum order you have to make. The products are fabulous !

I have screens on a few of my windows ! I try to let in the fresh air this time of year !

You could try a wallflower plug unit from Bath & Body Works...just get a light scent, link linen or cucumber melon.

I'm not a big fan of air fresheners--I hate the heavy, fake scents, too.

I would try baking soda in the cat box to try to eliminate the odor rather than cover it up with another smell. I would also agree with the other moms that said put poop diapers in a Wal-Mart or grocery bag, twist it a few times tightly right above the diaper, then wrapthe rest of the bag back inside out around that first part and tie it too, I put them right in my kitchen garbage and never had a smell issue doing that. But you could also just hang another wal mart bag on the outside of your back door and drop the wrapped dirty ones in there for the day , and when Hubby gets home, or if you are going out the door, then take it ot the big garbage.

You could also buy a couple bottles of natural essential oils that you like the scent of - lavendar, peppermint, eucaliptus, citrus....they have them in the natural grocery stores, and evne in the "specialty food" section of our local kroger....then just drip a few drops in the garbage can, even in the washer, and maybe on a towel or a wall mounted reed diffuser:

Since the room is gated off from the baby, you could use a small slow cooker, 2 qt or less, as an air freshener, I have one that was designed as that - just fill it mostly with water, add some lemon or orange juice and some cinamon, cloves, nutmeg, etc, and plug it in - smells great and all natural.

I saw your update about the chemicals. I was going to suggest Wallflowers from Bath & Body Works. I don't like a lot of air fresheners. They make me queasy and get a headache. I don't have that issue with Wallflowers. I don't know if you could handle those though. I but them when they go on sale, which is often. At the moment I have one that has spearmint for stress relief. It isn't a heavy minty smell, which was surprising.

When my kids were in diapers, I'd put the poopy ones in a plastic grocery bag, twist it closed then double it back over itself. No smell at all once it was in the garbage.
