I have combined filters before and it worked just fine.
Hi all - any AC people out there who can help out with this?
Our AC where we're renting needs 20x25x5 filter. We had a few and have used them up. Now I can't find them in stores ANYWHERE. All I can find are 20x25x4 and x1. I'll have to special order and pay shipping and handling.
Is it possible to use 20x25x4 and x1 together to get the x5 size? It would actually be cheaper than getting on filter of the 20x25x5 size. And definitely easier to find.
Thanks
The size is definitely 20 x 25 x 5 - that's what I pulled out - it's an attic unit and the place where the filter goes is WIDE. I was surprised because my old house had the 1" thick kind. Thanks for all the ideas!

You might come out better going to Home Depot and getting a reusable filter that you cut to fit your unit.
I am sure you checked both Home Depot and Lowes, but you can purchase one that you cut to fit and wash/rinse it every three months (or as needed).
I use them in some of my rentals since they are cheaper then replacing the filters.
When we were renting, our landlord provided the filters but they were the easy to get 1" type that were swapped out monthly.
Our unit takes a 6" thick filter, changed annually, that I order online. There is a local place that stocks them, but I can get them $15 cheaper online, even accounting for shipping.
You have to use the right filter for the unit for it to work properly. If you damage the unit by stacking two wrong filters it will be an incredibly expensive bill for you.
(Added: Check eBay for the filter you need. There are several good heating/cooling suppliers on there.)
I combined filters once and damn near burned out the motor. Just use a four until you can find the right size
Eta - the 5" filters are all over the internet for about 20-25$.
I'd call a local heat and air place. They usually carry a lot of different sizes.
I'd also question your numbers. Do you really really really need a filter that is 5 inches thick? most are only 1 inch thick. The air needs to be able to go through the stuff and 5 inches seems way way way too thick.
P.,
They had BOXES AND BOXED of them when I was at Costco yesterday.
Home Depot has this size as well.
here's a link to a box of 12 for 50...

I don't know if you can combine them, but here's a two pack for $30 on Amazon:

Maybe your landlord would split the cost or take it off of your rent? When we rented out our condos for a few years I didn't expect the renters to cover costs like this.
Call and AC repair place of your choice. We use Franklin Air in Haltom City. They let us buy a case at a time of our odd shaped filters for our rental property. We don't get charged anything extra for shipping and handling. We keep them stored and have plenty on hand.
