Hey Moms,

I'm a stay-at-home mom turned part time preschool teacher and I'm having a little bit of a hard time sticking both my kids in school 5 days a week. It's only for 3 hours but I just wasn't ready for my almost 2 year old to go to school yet (those darn student loans!). Anyway, I was wondering if any of you do something special when your kids come home from school, either everyday or every Monday. Like a special snack or a juice box or story? My kids are 4 and almost 2. Any ideas? I want school to be a great experience for them.

What can I do next?

There are 100's of things you can do..For after school snacks make them PB&J sandwichs but use cookie cutters to cut the sandwich in to fun shapes. Make them ants on a log ( celery with peanut butter with rasins on top)..when it comes to your childs school work have a board for each one of them to hang there paintings and other school work on.( my children loved this). Let them design there onw board to there likings..if you need more ideals let me know I have 100's..

We used to go to the park for a few hours. Special treats were getting ice cream. The kids would have peel cheese and apples or celery with peanut butter or cream cheese with rainins (ants on a log). The little hotdogs wrapped in crescent rolls were a hit. Fruits and veggies with dip are great at this age.

Hey, in my experience....the main thing is just letting the kids know YOU had a great day and missed them and then ask them about their day.
My kids loved it when I had a "picnic" for them on Fridays and we could go to the park or even just sit in the car if it was raining and have a snack together.
When my son was little, we used to come home and just sit in the driveway with the radio on and have a snack. It was warm in the car and somedays it was too windy to be outside. We would just recline the seats and decompress before we ever went inside.
Sounds weird, I know, but we enjoyed it.
Sometimes it doesn't take much to make your kids happy.

Best wishes.

Just make sure, whatever 'routine' you have after-school, or treats, is something you CAN keep up.
I learned, that once I started a simple 'once in a while' treat after-school, my daughter or any kid, will then want to have it everyday. Not just once a week. They will ask, whine, ask, and nag about it.
At this young age, they don't know what 'once a week' is. So for them, they want it everyday. Which may not be a 'habit' that you want to start.

After-school, we come home. My daughter unwinds (which is important for a child after-school. They need to deflate) and she can relax as she needs to. Then she typically napped after preschool. After school, she was TIRED and fussy. At that age, kids still benefit from naps and need it.

I always also give my daughter a snack at home... but not much 'sugar' based things. This is what I did, since my daughter was in Preschool and she is now in 3rd grade.
I didn't treat everyday after school was "special" and she 'had to' get a treat. Otherwise, they will then expect it everyday.... because it is the 'habit' YOU instigate as a Mom. And whether you can or want to do that, everyday. Afterschool. Or per your own after school chores/household things you need to do, and also incorporating that into the after school routines.

all the best,
Susan
