After Pregnancy Changes!

When my daughter was around 3 months old, I started noticing that my hair was coming out. I didn't lose hardly any during pregnancy and during the first few months after she was born, but now it's coming out like crazy! I've heard that women tend to lose all the hair that they hung on to during pregnancy but this seems crazy. Am I going bald?! I have pretty thick hair but I'm starting to get crazy. Please tell me this slows down!

What can I do next?

This is about the time that it starts to fall out. It is scary and you think you are going bald but you wont and it does back off after a little while.

I have thick hair too, and after my son was born it fell out by the fistful! It was everywhere! I always had a big wad of hair to take out of the shower. I think after about 6 months it started to slow down and get better. Kind of scary at first, but I never had any bald spots or anything like that. It will go away. Hang in there!

A lot of women lose a ton of hair. A friend of min would tug her pony tail when her daughter was about 4 months and get at least 10 strands every time.
I did not lose my hair until my daughter was about 6 months. To the point that I was getting bald spots. I had an annual exam with my GP anyway and they did a blood test - just routine - and found my thyroid was over functioning. After a few months of testing everything went back to normal without medication. Apparently things can happen to your thyroid after pregnancy. If it really worries you get blood work done and make sure you are ok.

I know exactly how you feel!! I was thinking the same thing until I went and got a hair cut and my stlyist told it was perfectly normal! Couldn't believe it! I lost so much I swear I thought I was going to have a bald spot. It does slow down just give it time!

Good Luck!

Happened to me as well...I swear my hairline actually receded from it. Complained to my primary care doc who referred me to a dermatologist, where I got absolutely NO help and was told it's a normal, post-partum hormone thing. Well, it didn't feel normal to me but I hung in there and it all grew back. I think this more than anything else explains the phenomenon of women cutting their hair short after they have kids....

Some hair loss is normal but if you feel like it is excessive talk to your doc about screening for anemia and thyroid problems (which are not uncommon pospartum).

with both my kids it started when they were about 4 months old and lasted about 1 1/2 months. It totally stinks! I would just wear my hair in a bun so it would fall out all over and then when I took the bun out I would get a TON of hair, but that was better than having hair everywhere all day long.

It can take up to a year for your hormones to change after having a baby. I don't know how old she is now but talk to your Dr to do blood tests just to see your levels. It is frustrating being a woman b/c when we have kids it changes our chemistry. I have been struggling with hair loss I am not balding but I feel like I am. My last kid is 2 and I have female issues that don't help my hair situation. I was reading on a Dermatologist web site that if you can pull your hair about a hand full out and the roots are coming out then you have to talk to your Dr. I just remembered that. Try not to get too crazy b/c that will cause you to worry more. Good luck.

My daughter is about to be 6 months old, and it's just really slowing down for me. When she was 4 months I had tons of it shedding(this didn't happen after my 3 yr old son was born, either), a receding hairline/baby hair thing going on in a few spots and I was sobbing about it like a little girl! Keep taking a good vitamin, and try to be good to your hair. It helped me to just keep it in a messy bun for about a month so i didn't even think of it much, plus it keeps the little ones from pulling on it, too. But now it's about stopped, like my friends all said it would, but i still had a meltdown over it anyway. Everyone was right. It's much better now

My hair fell out so bad after my son (it started at 3 months after too), that when looking at a picture I thought I had gray hair all around my face. Turns out, that's where my hair had fallen out and the scalp was showing. So attractive!

My hair is thinner, but it quite falling out in record numbers. Trust me, it will stop, just prior to you going out and buying a wig. ha!

Good luck and congrats on your new baby!

Scary, yes, but completely normal. It seems I didn't lose a hair on my head during either of my pregnancies, but it came out in handfuls after each. Every time I brushed or shampooed my hair, I was horrified by how much hair was coming out. I didn't go bald, it stopped on its own, and yours will too.
Try not to fret!

My hair fell out quite a bit around 3 months postpartum as well. I was breastfeeding at the time. It quit after a couple weeks and then got normal again. Good luck!

My hair fell out like crazy after having both kids. Seriously it was a lot. I never went bald though or looked like I had thinning hair. Takes times for hormones to adjust.

I've been there! It happened with each of my 3 pregnancies... HANDFUL's of hair coming out in the shower... it was irritating, but I never looked bald. I did get some funny spots across my front hairline that then grew back a bit and I had a funny line of shorter hair for a while.

I think it took till about 9 months post pregnancy for it to stop.

Very common and does eventually slow down. I used Nioxin which helps with regrowth (they sell it at Ulta). It was recommended my hairstylist and totally helped me. Make sure you're eating healthy and taking a multi-vitamin.

I also have really thick hair and suffered the same issue. With my first pregnancy (my daughter) my hair fell out in handfuls. It was never noticeable, except to the shower drain that is. With my second pregnancy (my son) after delivering him, my hair fell out terribly. So badly in fact that it did become noticeable, especially in the front of my hair. After the second pregnancy I was also taking the pill, so I stopped taking it and the hair stopped falling out. It may have been coincidence but if you are taking birth control it could be contributing.

I'm in the same boat as you as we speak. My daughter is going to be four months next week and my hair is falling out like crazy, mostly in the shower and when I blow dry it. It happened after my first daughter as well, and lasted pretty much from the time she was four months old until I got pregnant again with daughter number two, when my first was 9 months. So hopefully it won't last more than a few more months!
