Afraid of the Dark?

My 9 (almost 10) month old girl recently started waking up around 5 am (used to be 6) and just starts crying. She doesn't stop when either my husband or I hold her and pushes away from us. If we put her down, she doesn't start to play either. We can't seem to console her at all. She calms down eventually, but it seems that turning the light on helps her to calm down. She has a night-light in her room, but lately has been sleeping the latter part of the night in our room with no night light. I'm wondering if being afraid of the dark can start at such an early age. Help! :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your input! Baby girl has stopped doing this - perhaps it was just a phase or like some of you suggested, she was teething. Thanks again!

hey M.. my girl around 7 months started protesting being left alone in her room. so we started using a very dim nightlight and all was better ever since. she's 2 now and still sleeps with nightlight. which now i don't like because i can't imagine sleeping fine with a light on but doesn't seem to bother her. also she might be teething. i don't think they experience nightmares so early but who knows. try the nightlight thing hope it works

Hi M.,

My son is now two but he started having the same trouble at around that time, what worked for me was playing in the room with him, sometimes with the lights off and the night light on. This way when he would see shadows or anything else that frightened him I would show him that its okay and sing and dance sometimes even play with the shadows using his hands. Your baby girl can relate to happy moments with mommy with the nite light on after a while. Hope this helps.

Hi M.,

My son (Although the doctors claim couldn't be) was having night terrors at a very early age. I mean he maybe 6 months old, would just scream in his sleep, etc. It seemed like he was awake, but he really wasn't. His eyes were open as if he were looking at you, but he was still sleeping. Do you think this would be something your daughter is having? If so, they say just let them cry through it and try to put them back in their own bed.

I hope this helps

Hi melainie, I am J. and i have 3 children. Did you know that your daughter is at that teething age right now. They will wake up in the middle of the night screaming like crazy and going nuts. My youngest is 15 months old, when he was at your daughters age he started teething but no teeth came through yet. He would wake up in the middle of the night with uncontrolable screaming and crying. Going crazy and we didn't realize it at first but he was teething. Sometimes they will run a fever or look like they have a cold. It is just the teething. I don't think it is the light it is the I want help with my teeth and Nothing is working for me mommy. Baby orajel is good or even let her nibble on a COLD wet washcloth. Try that before the light situation.

It may not be she is afraid of the dark but more that she wakes up in a different room. When you bring her into your room in the middle of the night she wakes up in an unfamiler room. Try staying in her room when you get up with her and putting her back in her crib. Good Luck.

Well, I didn't have this problem until resently and not for the same reason. My daughter is almost 3 now and HATES to go to sleep! She'll get so tired that she'll start screaming for no reason and non stop! Gloworm! The music first distracts her from crying and then lulls her to sleep, and in your case it also lights up. But it's only going to work for about a week. But if you can get her to sleep for a week she should have no problem staying asleep. Fisher-Price makes a lot of light up music toys for the crib like the Ocean Wonders thing that you attach to the side bar, Trina Never got tired of that! She's almost 3 and she still has it!

An old daycare provider gave me an idea for this problem a long time ago and it worked for me. But she may be too young. When my oldest was a toddler we had a similar problem. She told me to buy a cheap flashlight and let him decorate it himself and it worked better than the nightlite. My oldest son was scared of the dark, he is now eight and is still slightly scared of the dark. My youngest is also scared of the dark. Not sure where and when they developed the fear but they are slowly getting over it. Hang in there!!!

No............. baby is not afraid of the dark.First of all it sounds like she has began to teethe, however in the process you guys have condotioned her to respond when the light turns on. Let me tell you the routine your on. baby cry parents get out of bed turn light switch on get the baby. Babies can very easily become conditioned. So now she knows what to except, that how she gets what she wants. In order to break the cycle your have to do something a little different. Put her in the bed, this time when she crys, go to the room, pick her up , show her some love until she goes back to sleep. Put her back into her bed. Stay on that routine don't stop, when she notice that her little game is over and she can no longer manipulate the two of you, she'll just go back to sleep. and she'll continue to sleep in her own bed. BIG mistake, don't put babies in your bed. If you invite babies to ride before you know it they'll want to drive. LoL
