We are relocating to Pittsburgh and I need advice on great family communities within commuting distance. My husband will be working off of West Penn Highway /376 Route 22. It's about fifteen minutes from Moon and on the border of Robinson Township. Any advice and opinions are appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I know where you mean, and I have a friend that lives in a very nice family neighborhood in that area. If you put Darlene Drive, Corapolis, 15108 into mapquest, and then look at the a wider view, you can see that there is a triangle made by routes 376, 22, and West Allegheny Roud. In this area, there are a lot of roads ending in cul-de-sacs. These are all nice family neighborhoods.

BTW - some people are confused because 376 in that area was very recently renamed. Until about a year ago, that part of the highway was 279. You are correct that it is 376 now, but to avoid confusion, you should just tell people your husband is working off the 22/30 exit of the Parkway West. That is what we Pittsburghers call that part of the highway :)

We live in Moon Township and love it. The only thing missing is a community pool, but there are dozens of splashpads minutes away and the Robinson pool is 10mins away. It shares the zip code of 15108 with Coraopolis (Cor-ee-opp-ahlis), and was rated as one of the top 100 zip codes in the country to raise a family.

With Coraopolis, you run into three school districts - Cornell (which may or may not be merging with Quaker Valley school district across the river), Montour (which I've heard some families say they moved out of the district to avoid that school system) and Moon. We have been very happy with Moon schools, from our friends' older children and neighbors. Our son attends their preschool which is great - it's overseen by a developmentalist and the actual teachers are high school students that are interning, so each child has a high school student assigned to them. We know each day's lesson, craft, etc and get weekly feedback. It also is extremely affordable at $90/semester or $180/school year.

West Allegheny has some great areas, some more rural than others. Imperial, Clinton, Fayette. They have higher property taxes than our area, and we used to live in that area (Oakdale), but the school seems to be great from what we hear.

Currently, there are several bus stops in our area, but the routes are changing soon, so I'm not sure if/how that will affect our area if you're looking for local transit.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Wish I could help you but I am only familiar with South, North and West. Sounds like you're east. I would do some research on the schools before making a decision. You could try the Pittsburgh Parent web site/Facebook page, or Macaroni Kid Pittsburgh Facebook page. Lots of moms there who would chime in based on personal experience. Also, the Pittsburgh Business Times does a ranking of all schools in Allegheny County each year -- you could probably request/purchase a copy. Top school districts that I know rank highly include Fox Chapel, Quaker Valley, North Allegheny, and Mt. Lebanon, but I don't believe those are east. There are some excellent private schools in the East End if you can afford the price tag. Good luck!
