I am looking for some experiences with Mirena and Paragard. I am really considering this type of birth control method and would like to hear about more pros and cons on both types. I talked to my ob about Mirena, although he said it is fine to get even if you are breastfeeding (which I am), I don't know if the paragard is better for this reason. Advice please!!!

What can I do next?

I like the Paragard as I had side effects with hormones. I've noticed heavier periods and I've had more cramping with periods than I have in the past. Otherwise, however, I'm very happy with it. It seems like a great alternative and I wish I'd known about it sooner instead of dealing with being on the pill in the years prior to deciding to have children. Overall, I feel it's worth it.

B.-

I am using the Mirena and it's working fine. I don't have a period anymore which is nice and no side affects. It did take a couple months to get acclimated to my body (I still had a period and cramps which is normal for me).

Good luck,

M

I've had the Mirena for 2 1/2 years now and I LOVE it!! You only have to think about it once every 5 years and its great not having to remember taking a pill everyday, and no side effects (for me at least). Even better...no periods!! I'm always recommending it to the girls that I work with.

hi B. !!!

i'm currently on the mirena sinceapril of last year and i haven't had any problems , im still breastfeeding my 17 month old son with no problems at all , the only downfall i've experienced is that my period has become irregular and on the first few months i was scared of a pregnancy but after talking to my ob i feel a lot more confortable with it , she even said that in some women the period shortens or disspaears , in my case it is a lot shorter , it only lasts about 3 days

i would definately recommend the mirena but you should hear both sides before making the decision

well i hope this can help and good luck with everything

I use the Mirena and have been for about 8 months. I love it! After the first few months of spotting, I now have no more periods! There is no pain, no side effects that I can see and it was easy for the doctor to insert. I don't know about Paragard. Good luck with your choice!

Hi B.!
I have heard great things about both. I have the Paragard. The reason I chose this one is because I did not want any hormones due to the health risks associated with that (and any hormones make me a little nutty!). :-)

I had the paragard inserted at my 6 week appt after my 2nd son was born. He is almost 10 months old. I am exclusively breastfeeding him and just got my 1st period last week.

All in all I have been extremely happy with it. You just need to decide if you want hormones or not - its a personal choice . If you go with the paragard, its good for 10 years.

Best of luck with your decision!

I'm very happy with the Mirena, but I've heard some things about the hormones that, who knows, may cause trouble down the road. Nothing proven yet, as far as I know.

On the other hand, it took my almost-unbearable periods and made them almost pain-free. And they're shorter and lighter. Definitely a big quality of life issue for me. But if you don't need to have lighter periods, it sounds like the non-hormone options will work just as well without the uncertainty.

Hello B.,

I am on the Mirena since July of last year just after having my second child. I breastfeed her for 9n months and had no problems with it. I have also not had any side affects besides having irregular periods. I have only had one cycle that lasted for one week. That is the only thing that I don't like, not knowing when to expect my next cycle. Besides that, I have not had any problems at all. I would recommend it.
Good Luck!!

I had a Mirena but only for a few months- I had a lot of problems with spotting and so had it taken out after a little while.

The other issue that I have is that now I have a blocked fallopian tube that could be related to the IUD (it's cause by infection and I haven't had any STDs or surgery). So the IUD may have made it so that I cannot have anymore children.

I know this is a rare complication but I hadn't heard about it when I got mine or I wouldn't have gotten it so I thought I would share. Good luck with whatever you decide.
