My 3 1/2 year old son will not stop licking his lips!! They look awful!! I have tried Vasoline, Vitamin E oil, Aquaphore, chap stick, etc. I put it on often and before bed but still licks his lips. I am also letting him chew sugar free gum a little. He focuses on chewing instead. Any suggestions?

Another suggestion for the night application would be lansinoh, the stuff used for breast feeding mothers. I used it on both kids lips and even faces at night. It is really thick but it puts a great healing coating that is safe for them to ingest if the fixation habit is not quite broken. Good luck!

My 4 year old suffered terribly with this last week because of her cold. Her lips and all around them were so chapped they were literally peeling and almost bleeding. I think she licked them because it hurt which made it worse.

I applied Burt's Bee's lip balm...I have the Honey and also the Pomegranate. I'm sure they are all good. I applied some throughout the day and also before bed. It cleared 100% within 2 days! I was amazed! Oh, and I also applied some 100% pure aloe vera gel on top of the lip balm before bed time. She actually does it herself now...quite the independent child :)

And another tip for you mothers...aloe vera works wonderfully on lines and bags under and around the eyes.

Try Beauticontrol's Lip Apeel-it is a two in one lip mask. You put the white mask on and let it dry (only takes a minute) then rub it off and then put our lip balm on it-the lip mask gets rid of all the dead skin off your lips! I had a lady get some at my last spa for her son who's lips are very dry!

You will be amazed at how soft his lips will be!! It is called LipApeel-look for it at www.beautipage.com/michelewells

My question is, how much water is he drinking? I find that the only time I lick my lips is when I'm thirsty. Can't hurt to push more fluids...

I'm having the same problem with my 5 year old. He looks like he has 4 lips. I've discussed this problem with the pediatrician. We're doing what we should, but she also has me using hydrocortisone cream, just of the skin around the lips. I use it all weekend and it really helps, but he's not doing a lot of writing during the weekend which is when he licks his lips like crazy. All we can do is weather the cold weather and keep gooping it on. Try the hydrocream. Good Luck! M.

My 3 year old looks like he has clown make-up on. Constantly chewing on the lips has chapped the lips and skin surrounding it. I tried exactly what you had to no avail. At his 3 year well check right before Christmas I asked his pediatrician about what I could use to help it heal. To take the red out he suggested a cortizone cream. Not on the lips itself, but on the skin above and below. Then slather him up with aquaphor.
He cautioned me though that this might not be merely chapped lips, but more often than not it is a stress release behavior. I was shocked. How could my three year old be stressed out? Turned out he didn't like preschool. One week after school was out his lips were back to normal and he was no longer chewing. Kiddos this age have difficulty expressing their emotions, and sometimes we think they are handling situations fine, but if we take a step back and look closer, they might be showing us they are having a harder time than we thought.
Also, Neutrogena makes a Hand Cream. Both my 3 year old and 13 month old battle with eczema and this is the only thing that keeps it under control.
I hope you find something that is helpful for your little guy.

I've had the same problem... the only thing that has kept up un it enough to get it healed is Arbonne Intelligence Revitalizing Cream. It works great for burns, sunburn, rashes, small irritations, etc., so I tried it on my daughter, and no more problem. Fortunately once it was healed, she stopped licking it. I just gave some to a friend for her daughter, and it cleared up in 3 days! It might sting a little at fist cause they are so raw, so I'd put it on after she fell asleep, but then we just did it every time we thought about it until healed. Now i use Arbonne Lip Saver SPF 30. If I use those fruity ones, she licks them plus everything else makes her lips really dry and crack anyway.

Our soon to be six year old does the same thing. We alternate between Aquaphor and Blistex DCT during the day. We always have him "grease up" with Aquaphor before bed and I always go in and put some more Aquaphor on him after he is asleep. Usually by morning it is much better and as long as we keep the Aquaphor on him any time we are outdoors in the cold we can keep it some what managable. Hope this helps!

Boy do I feel your pain! My 3 year old daughter is doing something very similar, she looks as though she has a ring around her mouth from licking then biting her upper & lower lips (just above & below). I am looking forward to reading the responses that you receive! My daughter screams when I put anything on her lips. She hates it. I even tried Disney princess chapstick, my chapstick thinking that if it was Mommy's she would be thrilled to use it. No such luck. She looks terrible and she's so cute...she looks like she's got something wrong with her! I am a big picture taker, needless to say, I am not taking any pictures right now!

Wait until he is asleep, then put Monistat on his lips. I know it sounds gross, but my ped. recommended it for my 7 yr old who has severely chapped lips, and within 2 days, his lips weren't chapped anymore. I was amazed!

Have you tried Carmex? I tend to bite on my lips quite a bit and that is the only thing I have found that keeps them from getting chapped.

Hi -

I use Aveeno baby lotion - made with oatmeal. My daughter complains that virtually everything else stings and chapstick, most of it, has acids in it like salysalic (sp?) acid that actually ends up making you need more and more and more. Aveeno baby lotion lasts for "24 hours", has colloidal oatmeal, doesn't sting, and actually tastes fairly sweet. (Yes, I tried it!) Good luck!

My youngest son also has this problem!
A few things to try-
- buy him his own chapstick, one that he thinks is cool... a hotwheels or Nemo tube of it perhaps. If he gets to keep it in his pocket or if you give him a string with the chapstick attached to it to wear around his neck, he might find it fun to apply and might concentrate less on licking his lips but instead suffocating them in lipbalm.- HOWEVER do not go for a flavored or scented lip balm, because he will want to lick his lips even more.
- coat his lips good in the evening before he goes to bed or after he goes to sleep with a chapstick, vaseline or a thin layer of over-the-counter 1 percent hydrocortisone ointment.
-instead of gum after applying chapstick or some type of topical medication you could also try giving him suckers to keep him from licking his lips or to reward him from licking his lips, so that you can break the habit and keep him from continuing the behavior.

I don't want to be an alarmist, but that behavior could be the sign of a form of autism. You may want to talk to your Dr. about it-

Hi J.,
My son who will be 2 tomorrow! He used to suck his first finger, and it would get so chapped I tried everything also. My father in law asked his pharmacy if they had anything for kids who suck their thumb. He purchased this stuff called THUM, it is over the counter. It is for thumb sucking and nail bitting. It is safte to use on kids. It worked for my little one... it is a liquid, so you just brush it on. Maybe that will help him!
Good Luck
