Advice on Bms

My son has not had a BM in 4 days. His pediatrician has suggested Benefiber 2 times a day and Pedia-LAX once a day. He has never had this problem in the past and I am starting to get concerned because he is complaining that this bottom hurts. At what point do I seek other medical advice? Any suggestions on how to treat his problem?

What can I do next?

Has the suggestions from your doctor worked? I went through some issues with my daughter and had to add mineral oil to her bottle. She finally outgrew it at age 3. It is not safe to go without a BM for more that 5-6 days so if what you've given him isnt working, then see another doctor. Up his water intake if you can and add some natural fiber (very little) to his fluids. Maybe that will help. Try a natural route so his body doesnt get lazy and rely on help. (which will cause issues later). Hope this helps!

my daugther has been suffering from this since she was brought home from the hospital. She has been on Myralax since 3 months of age. It use to be by prescription, but now you can get it over the counter at walmart. Works!! She is 2 1/2 now and finally out growing it. But thank god for Myralax.

C., OLD REMEDY THAT WORKS! I had the same problem with my daughter. I used Dark Kero Syrup in her bottle. Only use one dime size drop per day. I normally put the drop in her breakfast bottle. That gave her the entire day for me to monitor her BM's. It really works!

O.K. this is going to seem crazy, but it works.
#1- sugar free candy it has a laxative effect. it even states on the packaging that it has a laxative effect.(i am spesking from exp.that it will work)
#2- LAYS LIGHT POTATO CHIPS (it has to be specifically the LIGHT brand). They have olestra in them. They, too have a laxative effect.( my peditrician told me about that one.)
Those have a much more tasty taste than benefil.
Good Luck.

A little dab about the size of the end of your little finger of dark Kayro syrup in the bottle or sippy works wonders! It's a common old fashioned household remedy & it really works. Just be sure to use the dark Kayro, not the light.

We use Benefiber also, but you have to offer lots of water with it also. The fiber draws water into the stool to make it easier to pass, so you have to give him plenty of it.

A teaspoon of flax oil daily I researched is also helpful.

Fruits, vegetables and legumes (beans) help enormously. Particularly prunes and apricots (juice or fruit)

Lastly, A "sipping solution" is also helpful. Try making a smoothie with only fruit (water maybe instead of milk), yogurt and flax oil to sip on. I hope some of this helps.

P.S., constipation is common in toddlers, particularly boys. I would not worry until you have tried every method presented to you. Maybe do more research on the web.
