Advice Needed on Symptoms

My daughter is almost 3 months old and for the past month, she has had diarrhea. It is watery and comes out of her diaper. She is breastfed. She also has been drinking like crazy, probably trying to keep from getting dehydrated. In addition, she's sleeping like crazy. She will wake up to eat (about 6-8 oz of breastmilk) then play for a few minutes and go right back to sleep. She is reverting back to how she acted when I brought her home from the hospital. I took her to the Doctor and was seen by the N.P. She told me that there was nothing wrong with her, but everything I look up says that breastfed babies don't have diarrhea. Could anyone please tell me what could be going on????

What can I do next?

I would have to agree with you. Something is wrong. Take her back to a Pediatrician. If they continue to say nothing is wrong, I would look for a new Pediatrician. Sounds like she may have a virus of some sort.

What are you eating? That might have some effect on her. I would get a 2nd opinion a month sounds a little too long for diarrhea.

I breastfeed my daughter, too. Breastfed babies' poops are watery because breast milk is so much easier to digest than formula. My daughter had plenty of diaper explosions before we started introducing solids. As for the sleeping part, I don't know about that. You should go to the doctor and ask him/her. I find it more helpful to see a doctor than a nurse practitioner. Hope this info help!

My daughter did that for about the first month after coming home from the hospital but she would puke too, it turned out she was allergic to my milk. She had to have that nutrimigen formula because she could not tolerate anything else. Maybe she is having a problem digesting the breast milk. Doctors have told me that new allergies can develop at any time during childhood so you check that out if diarrhea persists.

The only thing I can think of may be teething. Does she seem to be drooling or chewing on things? It could be soon or a month or two before a tooth comes in after noticing signs. Check inside her mouth. You can feel the gums where the front teeth are to see if they are hard.

Maybe it is something your eating that your baby might be sensitive to. I would keep a log of everything you are eating and drinking, how much of each and the time you ate it. Try to see if there is a link some how. But at the same time babies that young are not on solid food so all they have is liquid to get rid of. Just keep her bottom protected with balm if it seems to be irritating her.

BF babies don't generally get diarrhea, but they DO tend to have loose stools (and in some pretty funky colors.) This would bother me as well- I'd get to a different doctor asap. It doesn't sound right. Have you changed anything YOU'RE eating? I know when I BF my daughter I couldn't eat certain things because they gave her gas and made her upset! I'd think about that, but I'd still get her to a different doctor.

My advice would to seek a second op' from either another Ped' doc or the E.R. Having the,"runs" that long can cause problems.

Have you taken her to the pedaitricain? I would call them... She could have caught a bug or something. How long has she had diarrhea? maybe she is just a sleepy baby. I just had my 3rd baby on March22 and she eats and goes right back to sleep.....

If she is strickly breastfeed, it might not be diarrhea. Breast feed babies have really runny stools. It might seem more to you, because she is growing and eating more. It is not abnormal for it to run out of the diaper on a regualar basis. That always happended with my boys when I nursed them and she could be sleeping alot, because she is growing. Sleeping alot isn't abnormal for a baby that small either. I wouldn't worry, especially if you had her checked out. I would just watch her for fever or dehydration.

Do you drink cow's milk? She might have an allergy to dairy. I hear about that all the time. There are a lot of things in cow's milk that little babies can't stomach. If you go to www.notmilk.com they have a list of all the things that drinking cows milk can cause. Also, was there anything you couldn't stand while you were pregnant, but you're eating now? If she didn't like it in the womb, then she probably can't take now either. Just a thought.

Hi, I would see if you can get an appointmet with her regular dr for a second opinion. How many times a day is the diarrhea? If its just loose stool once a day, the NP may be right, but if its several times a day, there is something wrong. In the meantime, give her a little pedialite mixed with water. I'de say like 1/2 oz pedialite, 1/2 oz water. This will prevent her from getting dehydrated. When my daughters were 3 months old we had a bad tummy bug too. They had projectile diarrhea. So gross. All the dr told us is to do was give them pedialite and decrease the ammount of formula they are getting until they feel better. I don't know if that would work for you though since your daughter is breast fed. Like I said I would get a second opinion.

If you think something is wrong, go to another doctor right away. Trust your own instincts. See a board certified pediatrician.

You can also call Call-a-Nurse for Children, which is a part of Methodist Children's Hospital, ###-###-####. You may have to hold a long time, so do not use this number for emergencies.

All three of my babies had what looked like diarrhea but if it has any Consistent like a wet paste its okay. Also s seedy mustary looking is okay.
Breastfeed babies hardly ever get diarrhea.
What are you eating? Keep a food log. Eat oatmeal and drink plenty of water. If I ate something like corn or tamales the baby's BM's always looked weird and sometimes greasy. IDK

Babies have weird looking BM's sometimes don't worry.

Also about the sleep she maybe going thru a growth spurt.

Hope this helps,
L.

In my experience, breastfed babies poop more frequently than formula fed, though it's not too runny. I would look at what you might be eating or if anything has changed in your diet. She could have an allergy to something you're eating. Also, go back to the doc until they help you get it figured out. This is why we pay them so much!

is it possible that she is cutting teeth? my son was breastfed and got diarrhea when he started to get his first 2 teeth, at about 4 months. She more than likely is going through a growth spurt.

She could be reacting to something in your diet. I've known several people who's babies were sensitive to momma having dairy in her diet. some can't tolerate tomato. I'd try cutting out dairy and see if it seems to help at all. Hope things get better!

When you took her to the doctor did they check her gluclose level? I have diabetes, when we brought our daughter home from the hospital she slept all the time. She end up in the hospital again because her body was used to over producing insulin, they gave iv fluids and force feed a bottle. After a week her sugar was normal. Good Luck!!
