My daughter is almost 6 weeks old, and over the last week I have noticed this rash covering her face. I wouldn't be so worried, but it seems to be spreading and getting worse at time, and has also spread to her ears (her right ear is worse than her left and has some little scabs that are going away). She doesnt have a fever, doesnt seem any more fussy than normal, and it seems as if the rash bothers me more than her. I thought that maybe it was a heat rash, and that its worse on the sides or her face, her ears, and around her mouth from when I breastfeed. I have called my doctor numerous times, but she's seeing 'if it will just fade away...if not call back and make an appointment next week'. Anyone have a clue what this could be, or what I can do about it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice, you have no idea how much help and support you all have been! I have so many questions since it's been so long since I've had a newborn, and I'm happy I have somewhere to go where people actually are serious about the answers they give and not 'just kidding' or 'just saying something'. After the doctors office said that they wanted to wait until next week to see her, they called back and told me they wanted me to try a topical non-steroidal creame and see if it relieves anything. It's just been 1 day, and we still don't QUITE know what it is, but I'm happier with the doctor now that they're atleast showing interest in my problem. The Aveno idea was great, too, there wasnt a HUGE difference but enough for myself and my husband to tell.

I'm a 44 year old mother of 2 grown daughters and grandmother to 3 boys. And have another grandchild due Halloween! I have custody of 2 of the grandsons ages 5 adn 18 months. Well let me tell you this........times have changed since my girls were babies and they now tell me things I did with my children were wrong and not to do them anymore! So what I now do in cases like this is I google everything. I google the words rash on babies face and press enter. Then I look at all that is offered trying to see if anything looks familiar. Then I call the doctor if I am unable to find what I need. Now if the child is feverish or has other issues I consult the doctor right away. And like someone else mentioned if they say no need to bring in, I call make appointment and take in anyway or I make visit to ER. Hope this helps.

Hi V....

I am very familiar with Longview, my family has spent WAY TOO MUCH TIME at Good Shepard although I live down in the Houston area. I used to live there too...great place.

Anyway, it might be Excema. If it is, it is very treatable and can go away with the right skin therapy/lotion. Here is a link I found to learn more about Excema http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eczema You can search online for more photos to see if you think that is it. There is a great photo there as well.

If you believe that is it, there is a fantastic product called Renew Intesive Skin Therapy that I use for my Super dry skin and that has been clinically better than Eucerin (name brand lotion) at treating Excema. I have friends that use this for their kids with excema to keep it from coming back once it is gone. It is just a lotion, not a "treatment" and it smells great and feels good. It is not mecidinal smelling or greasy. I use it daily and LOVE it!! If you are interested in using it, give me a call I can let you know how to get some for yourself through Melaleuca, they are know as The Wellness Company. I would love to help you!!

HI, I have a 9 month old baby girl and she had the same problem. I thought it was a heat rash too so i made sure she went to bed wearing something light. My daughter has problems with dry skin too so i thought that might be the reason. I made sure she was always clean especially after feeding..and since she's teething, clean her drool all the time too and I use Vaseline petroleum jelly. Now the rash is gone.

Try it. Could work for you too. If not and your doctor keeps saying it will go away but you are not happy with it, seek another doctor's advice.

My daugther had Baby Acne from about the time she was 5 weeks until she was almost 3 months old. It was aggravated by breastmilk that she spit out and let run down her cheek. It was totally harmless, but still worried me. (Especially come picture time.) My doctor was totally unconcerned but eventually prescribed a face cream to help clear it up. He told me that unless there is a fever, there is basically nothing to worry about.

I know as a mom that is not really what you want to hear. We want the doctor to tell us to come in right away so they can look at it. As a mom, I don't always wait for that next week. If I want the doctor to see what is going on, I just make the appointment anyway. It may cost me an extra co-pay, but it's worth it for my own peace of mind. I'm sure it is nothing, but if you feel that your child needs the doctor, then don't wait. Mom knows best!

It could be eczema. My son was diagnosed with it when he was about 4 or 5 months old. We later found out he was allergic to milk, and he would break out all around his mouth from breastfeeding. Once I cut milk from MY diet, he stopped breaking out. Now he only breaks out if he comes in contact with milk (from someones hands or something that has milk in it)or if he is around animals. Ask your doctor if it could be eczema, and/or try cutting regular milk from your diet. We drink Silk Very Vanilla Soymilk. I hope this helps.

Your daughter may be allergic to something you are eating. I'd try a very bland diet and eat the same thing for a little bit and see if it goes away. Then start slowly adding new foods back into your diet to see what might be causing the allergy.
Also you might see if something like Aveno might help. Both of my child have excema and I have to use a steroid cream on them. You might call a dermatoloigst and see if they can get you in.
Do you eat a lot of milk products? I know lots of babies have milk allergies. If you eat lots of milk products I'd try and remove those from your diet and see if that helps.
Good luck.
