Congratulations, what a great christmas gift! It is normal for a breast feeding baby to only have a bowel movement every few days because there is no waste for them to get rid of in breast milk.
I just had a baby on Sunday Dec 21st. Since I have been home (Tuesday) she has not had a bowel movement. I am breastfeeding should i be really concerned as she sees her pedi on Friday. She does have wet diapers.

Congratulations! I had my first daughter on December 18, 10 years ago, and she's the best Christmas present I ever
got. I wouldn't be worried. Breast milk is the "perfect" food, and there's not much waste there. She will start
her first bowel movement by having a black, tarry looking stool and then she'll start having bowel movements that resemble yellow seedy mustard. Gross, I know, but that's what to be looking for. If she seems otherwise, healthy, I wouldn't worry. It's only been 4 days, and it takes awhile for the colon to get jump started and start processing waste. If you're concerned, you can call your pediatrician or one of the labor/delivery nurses at the hospital where you delivered. Have a very Merry Christmas!
Congratulations on the new little girl...she will be the love of your lives!!!
Don't be concerned about her not having a bowel movement every day. Breast milk is more nutritionally "perfect" and is more thoroughly digested than formula...therefore there are not as many waste products to be eliminated. Give her time to show you what her "schedule" is...then you will know if she has a BM once a day, 3 times a week, or what. Also dont be concerned if the bowel movement is not solid, or formed....all of my 3 daughters had really loose, "runnny" bowel movements until they started eating cereal and other things besides my milk!!!
Merry Christmas!!!
Congratulations on your new baby and on your decision to breastfeed! You are making the best possible decision for your baby. If you have concerns that are related to breastfeeding, please feel free to contact La Leche League. You can find contact information for leaders local in your area on the internet. LLL is a WONDERFUL organization that is all about supporting breastfeeding moms. The leaders are very educated about all things breastfeeding and they are dedicated to helping breastfeeding moms in any way they can. There is no charge to seek help from the leaders. There are group meetings you can attend as well that are very nice as you learn that you are not alone in your feeding (or other) struggles as a new mom. Best of luck and Merry Christmas!
Congratulations! I had my first baby on Dec 21, 2005...best Christmas present! I would not be concerned since you are seeing the dr soon. My son also had not had a BM from the time we got home to 3 days later seeing the dr. Just be sure to mention it to the dr. For us, the nurse put a thermometer in his rectum and stimulated a BM, and all was fine. Merry Christmas!
i was told not to worry until its been a full week. congratulations!
Congrats on your early Christmas present. I hope you are able to stay home and enjoy the baby wothout the hustle and bustle of the holidays!
If I remember correctly, sometimes breastfed babies poop only 1x a day, to 1x a week. It's crazy, I know, but try not to be too worried about it, you'll see the ped on Friday, just keep feeding that blessing and remember all babies are different, and they don't read the books we read so they don't really know how they are supposed to act ;-)
You really should not be concerned at all about your baby not having a bowel movement since Sunday. It means she is using all of the milk that she is getting! Which is just fine. I have nursed 9 children and some were like that and others not. I have also been very active in LLL. I have a breast pump avialable if you find that you need one. If you need any breastfeeding help just drop me line! Merry Christmas!
G.!
Congratulations on your new baby! Welcome to the world of worry! (It's so worth it though!) If you are concerned, give your peds a call...they can advise you. (keep that number on speed dial! LOL)
And the best advice I got when I was a worried new mommy..."Don't worry too much about doing everything "right", the baby has no idea what "right" is and as long as she is loved and cared for and you do your best, it will all be ok." (Of course that is until she is a teenager and blames you for EVERYTHING anyway! LOL)
Welcome to the most amazing ride of your life!
I think the baby would be fine till tomorrow - but I know when I had my girl (now 16) that the nursery at the hospital (now OP Regional) told me to call if I had any concerns and they were awesome when i called - so you might give them a call just for peace of mind. Merry Christmas and congratulations on your new baby.
Congrats and just keep nursing. That baby knows how much she needs and will have a BM when she needs to. Breastmilk has a natural laxitive effect, so I wouldn't worry too much. My son (still nursing - never given formula) stopped pooping after his two month shots for FIVE days and I totally freaked! I took him back to the doc and she felt his tummy around to make sure there wasn't an obstruction and to make sure nothing was 'hard' in his intestines, and by the time we got home, there was a FULL diaper for me. YAY! The stimulation (massage) on his tummy must have gotten him going again. Good luck and Congratulations again on your Christmas Blessing!!

HOPE THIS HELPS
Hi G.! Congrats on Baby! As you can see the worry never stops! With a little baby, I call the doc about everything! Dont be embarrassed to, most moms call a lot. My breastfed babies had a bowel movement at every feeding but Iv heard so many different stories on whats normal. Your best bet is to call one of your nurses from the hospital that took care of you and baby or the pediatrician. Good luck!
