ok, so I am having my tonsils out this Wednesday, and I am pretty much terrified to say the least.... I have needed to get this done since I was a child, and have actually had it scheduled a few times this year then chickened out!! I have OSA and tosnil infections, tonsil stones, and overall discomfort with my tonsils!! What I am wondering is if anyone can give me some advice and maybe comfort?!!
My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids out when she was 3, but you can't compare kids to adults from what I have heard!!
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I had mine out when I was 19 & it took a good 2 weeks to recover, but it wasn't as horrible as I had heard. The main thing was to take the pain medicine faithfully because once that wore off and you had to go thru waiting for it to take effect again, that was agony. Just do what you are told and you should be good. I can't even compare mine to my daughter's because she fought w/us tooth & nail - she ended up being admitted into the pediatric unit twice for dehydration b/c she didn't want to take the pain medication so she didn't drink, dehyrdrated, it was a nightmare. But then again, she was 8 & knew everything! Best of luck to you and realize that if you chicken out again, it's only going to be worse next time.

i had my tonsils and adenoids out when I was 30.

I have a high tolerance for pain...but it was painful...sorry. DO NOT chicken out!! I can't tell you how much BETTER it was AFTER the first 48 hours.

I drank warm broth, ate ice cream and jell-o for about one week. I admit it took me a few years (like 5!!) to be able to eat ice cream and jell-o again!! :)

The first day you will feel like you have broken glass in the back of your throat. This is NOT to scare you but to tell you what **I** experienced...I slept A LOT...that helped. it also helped to drink things via a straw so that my throat would start "working"...the longer you go without eating or swallowing, the harder it will be on you in your recovery.

Please do NOT back out. Get an ice pack that wraps around your throat - put a clean kitchen towel around it - you never want an ice pack directly in contact with your skin - and put it on for 20 minutes at a time. It will also help relieve any discomfort you have.

You will be VERY happy you did this!!!

It's a bit more complicated in a adult, but once it's over, you'll be kicking yourself for not doing it sooner.
Be sure to take your pain meds when you are suppose to.
You'll be fine way before Christmas and you'll have a shiny New Year ahead of you with all of this behind you!
Relax!
You are going to be fine!

Having my tonsils out in my 20s was the best thing I ever did. I can still feel the space in my throat. But... It hurt! I was hurting pretty good for a couple weeks. Stay on your pain meds. Stay away from apple sauce... It did something weird to my sinuses when I would eat it. Be sure you have your schedule cleared so you can rest. It was well worth it!

I know its scary....but I think you will be OK.

A story to bring you some comfort:
The day before Halloween my 6y/o son was looking under his bed for a toy and he put a piece of plastic PVC pipe in his mouth (it was small, the kind that you put a kids bedtent together with) anyway he jammed it down his throat and scraped his left tonsil! After a visit to the Minor ER, then the ER, then finally the ENT Dr. we were informed that he had scraped his tonsil almost completely off, it was holding on by a thread (gross!) and it fell off by itself the next day!

All the Dr.'s were AMAZED that he was taking it so well...it was a serious injury and he talked, ate and drank...just like normal!

Good Luck!

I had mine out at 17. It was pretty uncomfortable for a few days, and then it was fine, really.
Just like a really bad sore throat while things are healing.
Drink some ice water (I won't tell you eat ice cream constantly! :) ), and have some soft foods ready. You won't want to eat anything with any kind of texture for a few days.
First day you'll be down and recovering (I assume they're putting you under), after that, you'll be up and moving around just fine.

I had my tonsils out in my 20's and I've never regretted it. I remember that my mom made me soft boiled eggs the day after, and I was crying while I was eating them! But honestly, I think I was only uncomfortable for a few days, I barely remember it (it was 20 years ago). Don't chicken out, you will be happy you followed through, trust me.

My ex had his removed when he was in his 30's. You will have the typical soreness and discomfort of the sore throat that you have already become used to all these years. He was very happy after having it done.
Stock up on easy to swallow stuff for the first 3 days.. you'll be fine.

Baby steps to the hospital but you can do it!! Don't chicken out...do it!

I had mine out when I was 18 and I will be honest...it was so painful for a few days. Take your pain meds on time for the extreme discomfort. Make sure you have help with your kids so you can rest and relax. Stock up on any soft food that is the most appetizing to you...because after surgery you do not want anything going down your throat so you want to force yourself to eat something that you actually REALLY like. Pudding...jello...ice cream...sorbet..popsicles. I remember not wanting anything and my parents forcing me to eat...I lost about 5 pounds over 2 weeks.

You are gonna be fine and so grateful months afterward. It helped me so much with my overall health. I was getting tonsillitis and strep all the time...now I never do.

Baby steps to the hospital...breathe, one, two, three...you will be fine!!
