Adult Heart Murmur

I have an adult heart murmur.

Yours has probably been there for quite a while, this is just the first doc that picked up on it.

Unless you have had a recent serious illness with fever? I had Scarlet Fever in my early 20's, which caused the scarring and ultimate murmur.

It has not changed my life one bit. There are different levels, and once yours is higher than a level I, you and your dentist should discuss prophylactic antibiotics.

Don't worry about anything yet. Just have your OB follow it and mention it to other doctors you visit, like family, internist.

I developed one in my late twenties (or maybe it just wasn't noticed before?)
It's never been a problem. I'm 43 now and perfectly healthy :)

In April I stayed over night at the hospital because I had chest pain. They found a leaking murmur and pvc. They said it was nothing to be concerned about they just wanted me to stay over for observation. I am not on medicine or anything and I do not need to follow up with a doc. I wouldn't worry too much. Just keep an eye on it. Good luck to you.

I was told I had a heart murmur when I was in my twenties. It was labeled as being normal and not of any concern. I'm now 68 and it's still not a concern. The doctor can hear it at some visits and not at others.

What did they tell you about the murmur and it's cause?

My mother had a heart murmur that did not cause her any difficulties until she was in her 60's. Her's was caused by a leaky mitral valve which was damaged when she had scarlet fever. As she aged the leak became worse but it wasn't a problem until late in life. She did have to have the valve replaced eventually. She lived into her 80's.

I had one show up when I was 24, they scanned my heart and saw that it was okay for now, just had a small leak in it. They said if i really took care of it with exercize that it would be fine. My uncle had one, he started running marathons and his completly went away! BUt I've also heard its common in pregnancy??? I"m not worrieda bout mine much, as long as I do my best to take care of myself....
