I have been having pain behind my right ear for about a year now. I had a CT scan that came back normal. I've had sinus issues and think maybe it could be from that. I have been to two ENT's and they don't see an infection when they look in my ear. I am about to be sent to a third one. I had an MRI a couple days ago and get the results on Monday. My ear is killing me. Sometimes I have dizziness. With my first episode I was lethargic with a fever and just felt awful. That lasted for about a week. Strangely I took a Benadryl the dizziness went away. But I have this constant fullness in my ear that is driving me crazy. Does anyone else deal with this. I don't understand why it won't go away and why they can't find a cause.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I was diagnosed with TMJ. Seeing a chiropractor and a PT that is helping a lot. (8-11-12)

I know it sounds a bit odd, but I have the same ear problems when I drink cows milk, even just a small amount. When I give it up, the fluid disappears (after a few days) and my ears/head feel fine. Milk allergies are actually very common, and most time the cause of child ear infections that require tubes . . . Hope it helps!

I'm not sure about your ear pain. As far as the dizziness...inside your inner ear there are crystals that float around. Sometimes the crystals settle "wrong" and you can feel dizzy whenever you move. This can be fixed by seeing a Physiotherapist who is trained to deal with it. I believe they turn you upside down and move your head in different directions trying to get the crystals to settle in a better area. Because you are having such pain and a fullness feeling I'm not sure this is what's going on for you but wanted to let you know just in case.

Good answer.
Also, have you heard of Meniere's Disease?

I am not a doctor, but this would be one of the options in my opinion. My neighbor had it and described these same symptoms. If it is this there are some dietary things and hormone related things that make this better or worse.

hi,I was once told by my doctor that I had built up fluid behind my ear when she took a look at it on a yearly visit.....because I was having this feeling as you have described in my ear(even bothering me tonight by the way)and have no idea why it will not drain because when u get older unlike children your ears should be in the position to let it drain. well, I will tell u that we did try sweet oil in the ear with a cotton ball on my son when he had constant ear infections and fluid and we sware by it,after a little while of that and it was gone a pharmacist told my mother of it why i am not doing the same I don't know moms just don't think to take the time to help with what our bodies sometimes I guess :>). anyways,I also had another doctor look at my ear and tell me that he thought I had tmj arthritis on my jaw,he said he did not see fluid in my ear..... he said he had seen many people sware they had an ear infection because their ear was just killing them and that is what it was tmj, look it up on search engine. if it is the fluid or tmj who knows, maybe me getting a 3 check up would be a good idea but just some things to wrap your mind around since you have had no luck in finding out about yourself.

Hi Marie,

Do you have a chiropractor? Chiropractic care is not simply for back injuries but is a complete wellness system that keeps your body well. You've already tried the medical route and it didn't help. If you don't have a chiropractor, go to upcspine.com and fine one in your area. This website has a list of upper cervical specialists that work specifically with the immune system and removing interference so that the body can be strong enough to heal itself.

Whoever you call, interview them the same way you would a medical doctor. Ask them how chiropractic builds the immune system. If they don't know, you're at the wrong office.

God bless.....praying you feel better soon!

Please try a decongestant. It dries up fluids throughout our bodies, and is probably also why the Benadryl helped (antihistamine). It won't cure the problem, but it may help the pain if you have fluid in your inner ear.

My first thought was Meniere's Disease, although that is usually accompanied by ringing in the ear. I have had similar symptoms to yours, ear pain and dizziness, and testing has not resulted in a diagnosis yet. In my case, it comes and goes - my doctor thought it was vertigo and prescribed antivert, which didn't really help much. Ear pain could also be from clenching your teeth, or grinding them when you are asleep (TMJ), or even from wisdom teeth that are starting to erupt. I know it is frustrating trying to figure it out - I hope that the MRI results will give you some answers, even if it is just to rule out what ISN'T wrong with you. I'm sorry I don't have any answers for you, but hopefully the next ENT will be able to help. Good Luck.

I think you should see a chiropractor. Having a postural analysis done may point out some reasons for these symptoms. TMJ really could be the cause. Also, the sternocleidomastoid muscles can give these symptoms.

I am having the same problem. I have had ear pain and ear problems pretty much all my life. Had ear tubes when I was a child and everything. Been to numerous doctors about awful ear pain, and so much dizziness that I cant walk straight at times, and so bad at times that I run into things, and they said just an ear infection, or nothing was wrong. Finally found a ENT doctor, and he looked in my ears for a bit and finally found out that my ear drums were deformed. They are sucked in so far into my ear that I am having ear surgery next month to have reconstructive inner ear surgery. Because they are sucked in so far, they created pockets inside and fluid and stuff has caused horrible pain, and made it diseased so they have to remove all of it now, because my estheshia tubes havent been draining properly either. Gross I know..

It has taken years and years of different doctors to finally diagnose it.
So dont give up, you know how your body is, so dont let them tell you nothing is wrong. Be persistant.
Ask them to take a closer look at your ear drums. Hopefully if something is wrong they can take care of it. May just need ear tubes to fix it.

Hope that all works out, but keep switching doctors until you get an answer.
