I have been spotting for over two months now along with intense cramps. I have had a pap and it came back normal, I had both types of ultrasounds and found nothing. for the past week now I have been bleeding heavy with intense cramps. my gyn suggested d&c and talked about nova sure procedure. Well when I had a pap my gyn was to get a byopsy but said he was unable to do so due to some blocked stopped it. but doesnt know what. Should i seriously get another opinion or trust that he has been doing all that he can and should be doing. any thoughts would help.

I had something very similar when my daughter was about 5 months old. I went in for a hysteroscopy and they found that I had a benign congenital malformation and I required a d&C. The d&c made it infinately better! I love my ob/gyn Dr. Jeffrey Youngkin and trust him!

You need to either go back to your doctor and ask for detailed explanation of what he/she feels is going on; or find another doctor that you are comfortable talking to and who will take the time to listen and explain what is going on. If you think you might want to have another child you do not want to have the Novasure procedure as it depletes the lining of the uterus and you will not be able to carry another baby.

No one likes to be poked and examined by doctors, but it is your body and you need to be proactive in staying healthy. If you find that after you leave the appointment you can't remember what was said, take notes, and ask questions. You have every right to know what is going on with your body. I work for a group of Ob/Gyn doctors and know that sometimes they forget to address patients on a level they can understand. If you are not comfortable with what you are hearing get another opinion. Good-luck!

The gender of your doctor is not the issue but instead it's your confidence in your doctor's opinion. As the other moms said, please get a second opinion. You have a right to a copy of your medical file upon request. Call your best friend (sister-in-law or anyone you trust) and go to her OBGyn, file in hand. You know your body best. Trust your instincts.

Hi R.,
I'm just curious what was the doc getting a biopsy of? Did he tell you what he was looking for? And what kind of blockage? Typically a D&C is used after miscarrage, or having a baby and the placenta is still adhered to the uterine wall, or for endometryosis. In my findings it's always better to get a second opinion before you let anyone do anything to your body.

since you said that the doctor wasnt able to get the biopsy I would ask him what he intends to do. D&C or more tests.... Tell him that your wanting to get this over with. Knowing that your doctor knows that something is wrong (him seeing it for himself) should make him move forward with what ever he plans to do. Trust your doctor on this if he is willing to do something about this.
If your doctor just wants to play the wait game go seak other doctors for this problem. But make sure you give them all the information from your other doctor.
If your bleeding like that you need to get the help. I lived with abnormal bleeding and cramping that felt like stabing pains for 10 years and they ended up doing exploratory surgery on me then finding my overies and all my girlie parts were messed up. I ended up lossing all my girlie parts with a hystro. because of all the damage, abnormalities, and scaring there were on them. Before I went to my last doctor I started thinking it was in my head because all the other doctors never could find anything wrong with me.

I hope this helps. Good luck with all and best wishes

You absolutely need to take charge of your health and talk to trusted health professional. Is there any chance you could be pregnant? I spotted for a month and a half and had severe cramps, as well. Turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy. It took FOREVER for the doctor to figure out what was wrong. It could be a variety of different things, but the bottom line is, if you want answers and you want to get to the bottom of this, you need to talk to someone you can trust. If you are not getting anywhere with your current physician, find another one.

Get a second opinion and if you can, get in with Dr. Uribe. He is FANTASTIC and knows his stuff. I have had several problems in my 49 years - too numerous to list on this post! and have lived in several big cities here and abroad. I've gone thru my share of doctors both male and female who want to solve everything with a Hysterectomy. Well, I still have all my body parts and they are functioning pretty well thanks to Dr. Uribe. I was leary at first because normally the Docs who also deliver babies concentrate mostly on that and not other female issues...but not Dr. Uribe, he;s far and above most other doctors and he's SO up to date on ALL research - and is not just delivering babies! Good luck.

A D&C sounds like the correct way to go. It is actually a diagnostic scrape, so you will have a lab test in any case.
As a plus, it should put paid to your abnormal bleeding episodes and the gynae will take care of any cervical erosion you may have at the same time by doing a cautery.

Yes......get a second opinion! I had abnormal bleeding, heavy bleeding, intense cramps for over a year. My old OB/Gyn told me it was just bad PMS.

I got a second opinion and found out that I had Endometriosis and sever scarring in my Uterus (or "Universe" as my daughter called it)...I even had scarring around my liver and bladder.

My new OB/Gyn tried a couple of procedures to save my "Universe", but ultimately they didn't work and a Hysterectomy was my best option. Exactly one month ago I had a hysterectomy and just this short time later I feel GREAT!!!

I'm not saying a hysterectomy is the answer for you, but a second opinion IS....Good luck!! :)

Hey R.,
I live in East Texas, and I had the same problem. My doctor performed the Novasure procedure on me, and while it stopped my bleeding, I still have serious menstrual craps that just about put me to bed. We are talking about just doing a hysterectomy and getting it over with now.

Are you taking any herbal supplements? I noticed when I was taking milk thistle, that my flow and pain got worse. I'm by no means a doctor, but I feel for you because I've been there. Feel free to shoot me an e-mail if you want to talk.

I had this same problem a while back and my sister who is a nurse suggested that I stop using tampons for a while. I did stop and after 3 months my periods were back to normal. If you do use tampons I would suggest using pads for while. If you don't use tampons then I would say that the change is probably hormonal and taking some supplements may help. There are plenty of health food stores in the area that offer supplements/vitamins for women in their 30s and 40s dealing with these changes. Hope this helps, and I hope you get to feeling better soon :)

Yes, you need to get a second opinion. The bleeding and cramping is not normal. You will probably have to get a D & C, and you need a Doctor who will explore this further.

My sister had a d&c when she was about your age...I believe for the same reason. She said that it was life changing for her. She was able to think again...like a 'brain fog' had lifted. (I do not know what 'nova sure' is.)
I would STILL get a second opinion. I recently had 3 different opinions for my son's knee...The third doctor was the most thorough and came up with a great treatment. If you can, find a specialist...someone who studies your particular problem as their forte. If you don't like their bedside manner, find another one...Doctors are all over the place. Just make sure you bring copies of any tests you've already had at your previous doctor. Sometimes insurance will not allow the same test by a different doctor. That way, the new doctor has as much information as your first doctor...and he might decide you need a different test to give him more complete information.
I hope you get to the bottom of this...you must be miserable. Just don't give up.

I would consider a second opinion in your shoes also. What does your doc think is the cause of the bleeding?

Have you had your thyroid checked lately? I know a couple women who experienced long periods of spotting because they were hypothyroid.

I'd get a second opinion. Pain is the way your body communicates that something is wrong. The intense cramping strikes me as odd and more than from hormonal changes. If you have health insurance, then it should only cost you the copay and your time. Although, best to have a copy of your test results/records from your first doctor to take with you; that way you can make the most of the opportunity of the other doctor and get an informed diagnosis.

I don't know if you had the D&C done, but the exact same thing happened to my Mom 30 years ago, and after she had the D&C, it all stopped including her periods. She never had another one.....guess it was her body's way of going thru menopause. I agree that pain is the body's way of telling you something is wrong - it's time for another opinion. If you are using tampons, make sure they're from a health food store - the ones on the "shelf" are too polluted with chemicals our bodies just don't need (but I'd recommend using pads too). Good luck.

I have been going through the exact same thing. My doctor gave me some pills to stop the bleeding. You take them for ten days. I have been taking them for seven days and have stopped bleeding for at least 2 full days. It got alot lighter after two days of taking the pills. I feel good now but I am unsure of what is going to happen next time I am supposed to start. I am 42 years old and mine started with skipping a period for two months and severe abdominal pain and bloating. I was prescribed an antibiotic for seven days and then I started. A week later I was sent to the gynecologist. He then did a pap and an ultrasound and found two cists on my right ovary but according to him they are common and nothing to worry about. The day after that appt. I started again and was bleeding very heavy with severe cramps and back pain (which I have never had before) the pap came back normal but I was still bleeding. after another week the doctor told me start taking those pills right away. So far so good but I worry that i should also get a second opinion. Anyway, I would ask your gynocologist about the pills. The name of the prescription is medroxyprogesterone 10 mg tbrr. I hope this helps both of us. T. Perez

You need a second opnion. Last year I went to the doctor with sever PMS, cramps and unusually heavy bleeding. I also had a cyst on my right ovary. My doctor gave me a pamplet with several options: birth control, DNC, Nova Sure and a hysterectomy. My doctor retired right after my appointment, so I couldn't discuss it with him after I did some research, so I went to my family doctor who I have known for years and trust completely. I had tried birth control and it made my issies worse. My family doctor said he wasn't familiar with Nova Sure, but that from what he knew if it were his wife he would try that first, so I did. I eneded up using my origional GYN's partner just because I liked my doctor so much I thought he would be ok, because thery were partners. Along with the Nova Sure, they did a DNC, but did not remove the cyst. As promised Nova Sure made the bleeding lessen, but the cramps and severe PMS were worse a year later. I returned to the gyn's office and they did my yearly exam and perscribed prozac for the PMS or PMDD. After the exam, my pain just got worse, so I called and they did a sonogram. When I called for the results I was told "there isn't anything significant enough that the doctor will do anything about". Pain so bad that you are either taking pain relievers or laying around the house in tears is significant to me. I found another gynwith the help of my family doctor and a week ago had a partial hysterectomy. It's amazing but the pain is gone. I am not even experiencing any pain from the surgery any more. Sorry for the long story, but I just wanted to do more than suggest you get a second opnion, and thought sharing my story might help. I never liked going to the doctor, but I have learned that if you think something is wrong with your body, follow your instinct. If I hadn't gotten a second opnion I would still be in pain. And if you aren't sure about what the doctor has suggested, get a second opnion. I have talked to a few people who had Nova Sure and it worked well, but I also talked to some who said it didn't work at all. You also need to find out what is causing the cramps. The internet is also a great tool, the doctor who did my surgery last week thought it was great when I told him I had researched the options online. I hope this helps a little. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I would definatly get another opnion. That is definatly not sounding like everything is ok. And if it is then why are you still having all these questions. You should find a doctor that will explain everything or the nurses can explain all your questions. You should be able to leave knowing whats going on or have the security that you are going to find out with more testing. Go get another opnion for sure.

It sounds as though you have been through the ringer! You have also tapped all available normal resources, you have been examined several times by same doc! Try and get a second opinion! It is not normal to bleed or spot that long or often!

If you get a second opinion, ask the doctor to run a thyroid test, check your hormones, and for PODS(Polysystic Ovarian Disease Syndrome. I have it, except for the cramps, it reminds me of me before I was married! I was put on the pill which helped out a lot!

Good Luck!

I think you need another doctor. Bleeding for 8wks. is not normal. Could you be pregnant & going through a miscarriage? Sometimes early on the baby can not be seen if you are losing the fetus.Could be a blood clot that is going away on it's own as well. I would go see someone else. Your doctor should have been able to tell you more than they did. Did you get a vaginal ultrasound? Biopsy on what? He(?-she) could not say what you had, so what would they biopsy? Get another opinion. Thoughts are with you.
