My son had his adenoids and tonsils and ear tubes inserted at age 15 months. He was always so sick with constant colds or ear infections. The surgery has been the best thing for him. We are going on 2 months now illness free. He has been a much happier guy :)

My daughter had them removed at 18 months. She was constantly congested, had lingering nasal/upper respiratory infections, snored, etc. and the x-rays showed really large adenoids. The outpatient surgery was really very short (maybe 20 minutes) and she did great. Was literally running around once we came home from the hospital (we made her rest as much as possible), had no noticeable pain and was 100% back to her normal self after a good nap. Best part was she didn't have another nasal infection for nearly a year and no more snoring!

My son also had huge adnoids and tonsils. The size of a full-grown man. He had them removed at age 2.5. It was a very basic surgery. He had to have this done because the natural drainage for mucus was blocked. His nose ran constantly. He kept being sent home from daycare for having a runny nose. The workers just assumed he had a cold. Guess what? 8.5 years later he has only been home sick from school three times. It was a very wise choice to have them removed.

I had mine out, it's not a huge deal, though it helped me a whole lot. Before I always had sore throats, since then I rarely do. If they do the surgery, I really recommend lots of popsickles instead of ice cream - IC really felt like it clogged my throat, whereas the popsickles helped a whole lot. My daughter had a cleft pallet repair surgery & a couple times had tubes put in her ears, it is never easy to put your kids in someone's hands like that. If she trusts the doc, it goes a lot easier. So do homework on the doc, then listen to what they say. Good docs sure make it a lot easier.

Granted I had mine removed 15 years ago, I had a very good expereince with them being taken out. I also had my tonsils removed. Before having this done, I had strep throat, ear, sinus and other throat infections constantly. Something around 8 or 9 times a year. Since then, I've had strep 1 time and I do still get sinus problems but not nearly as bad as I used to. I have not had a single ear infection since either.

My daughter had her tonsils and admoids (everyone has them) removed when she was 4. Her tonsils were so large that they were almost touching and the adnoids were removed as well because she was starting to experience sleep apnea. She had no problems with it other than the usual soreness afterwards though mainly in her throat. I was told she would probably grow into them but with the breathing issues, it was recommended to get it done.

My 4-month-old has swollen adnoids and is a noisy breather, congested all the time. It's awful for him.
We might be in your friend's boat someday.
