I Need help!!!! My Step-son was taking Ritalin 20mg last year. Now he is going to take a medication Daytrana 10mg. He was not very sucessful taking Ritalin 20mg I feel he needed a higher dosage. His Mom said that now he can go to a lower dose bc this med is stronger, is that true? She has been known to lie, and manipulate things, is this dosage sounding true?

What can I do next?

My son is 14 and has been on many different medications since he was four. All medicines are different and have different dosages. You will find one that works well for him but you may have to try quite a few before you do. I have never heard of Daytrana. My son has been on Ritalin LA for about 5 or 6 years now and it works great for him. In fact we are lowering the dosages gradually. He had gotten up to 40mg, then dropped to 30 and is now on 20. He is doing fine. Some medications can make things worse and cause depression so watch that closely. When my son was about 8 we tried him on Concerta and he was so depressed. He would even talk about harming himself and he would chew holes in the collar of his shirt. Medications react different for everyone. So if you notice anything unusual when starting a new med contact his doctor ASAP. Although it may take a couple of weeks for him to get use to it. It is so hard sometimes watching a child with ADHD go through the things they do but don't worry it will get better!!!!

My 7 year old has been on several different ADHD meds since he was 4 yrs old. They all have different dosages, just as with any different medications. Acetominophin has a different dosage as ibuprofen or aspirin. If you or your husband has concerns about medications, how about you attending the next doctor's appointment. Then you could ask his doctor any questions you may have.

It is true. My son was started on ritalin 10mg tablets twice a day and it stopped working after about 6 mths, so the Dr. changed him to 10mg once a day patch. And it worked better, lasted longer and his behavior was much better and controllable. And we thought maybe he would need a higher doseage like 15 mg but we wanted to start with the 10mg and it was fine, because it is stronger then the 10mg twice a day (so 20mg) of ritalin tablets, more effective. Again, it's like his bad behavior where he is in danger of hurting himself or others and can be uncontrollable returned again 6 mths later. So i had researched it and the child works (not always, but mine does) a tolerance level and it can stop being effective. So just last week (after like 7 mths of the 10mg patch) we had to up it to 15mg and he is doing better. Hope this helps, you can email me with any more questions if you like.

You know, I am no a big fan of ADHD drugs. I feel that is opening a door for harder drugs later in life.

I have a son that has ADHD, his teacher last year gave me a suggestion. I trust her judgement b/c she has been an elementary school teacher for over 20 yrs.

She told me to give my son Mountain Dew soda. It took maybe a week before I noticed the changes. I would give him a can in the morning, she called me by noon during lunchtime to let me know that everything was fine. My sister kept him for me one
Saturday. She thought the idea was dumb!!! She tried to take him to run errands and pay bills. She just could not deal. So she fed him and ordered him a Mountain Dew with his meal. She called me within 20 mins of him drinking it to let me know that he was much easier to deal with.

I am telling you, some of this stuff sounds stupid, but it is effective. I am the type of parent that does not give my kids candy, soda, or junk food for that matter. But, I tried it. This school year, I did not give it to him, and I see the difference. He was more focused, peaceful, and better behaved when I did give it to him.

This teacher also said that she kept it in class for all of her ADD/ADHD students. It was recommended by a doctor.

Let me know how things turn out.

yes its true, my son was taking adderall xr 10mg (or so, i cant remember right now sorry) and adderall 5mg, one each once a day so 15mg a day, after awhile it stopped working and he switched him to vyvanse 10mg which is working better. the adderall xr is supposed to last 8 hours and the vyvanse is supposed to last 12 hours (that way they can get through school and homework). my son tried the ritilan (sp?) but it just made him depressed, anyway, good luck, sometimes it takes a while to find the right med also!! we've been doing it for almost 2 yrs.
