After working with a child phsycologist for several months and our peditrician tehy have diagnosed my 5 year old has ADHD. We will begin seeing a pyschiatrist as of tomorrow since I feelseh will be better suited to help my daughter. She also specializes in ADHD. My husband and I would like to avoid medication if possible so I am just wondering is there anythign wwe can try before we have to resort to medicine. As I would like the medication to be a last resort if we can not get AShlyn under control. Any info would be appreciated. TIA.

What can I do next?

K.,
I am a certified parent coach and have had some experience in this area. One thing that seems to be a constant for ADD/ADHD children is the need for "green space" and less exposure to the screen (tv, computers). By green space, I mean a place where there is a lot of grass, trees, nature. Something like the big field at Zilker. The green has a calming effect. Even rooms that are painted green have a calming quality. TV, computers, and video games have fast moving images and have a stimulant effect on the brains of all children, particularly those with ADD/ADHD. Could you see if there is a difference in her after exposure to outdoor play in a green area? Have you noticed this before? Does anything else seem to have a calming effect?

I would get a second opinion and talk to a nutritionist vs. your doctor. ADHD is so overdiagnosed these days, I hate to see so many children doped up. When I learned that schools actually get more $funding$ for kids that are diagnosed ADHD it made me very wary, they now have a financial reason to tell you your kid needs to be on drugs.

Hi K.,

I so feel you...my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD when she was 5..she is 8 now and we did everything we could to not put her on medication. I have her on nutritional supplements and corOmega this form of action has helped tremendously but unfortunetly she still needs medication...most doctors will tell you that medication is what you need, at least that is what happened to us.

I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. There was a great thread with tons of ideas a couple of days ago.

Diet changes can help a lot of ADHD people, K.. I would look into this more, as sometimes it's a gluten thing, but not always. I highly recommend visiting Dr. Jeff Ulery at Ulery Wellness Center on Bee Caves. He's incredible and can help! www.ulerywellnesscenter.com.

Blessings to you!
