My son also has ADHD. And he is on meds now. He has been for three years now. They help him to focus on his school work better. Some poeple don't like to put their kids that have ADHD on meds. But it make a big differences I know it has with ny son. Maybe you should look into that. The meds aren't as bad as some people think. Also I work with him on his homework and help him to stay focused. It helps if their in a quite room also. And at school my son works one on one with a resouce teacher that will help to it's work for my son. And have a talk with her class room teacher.

I am an occupational therapist who works with children who have ADHD. I would suggest allowing your daughter to move while completing school work. For example have her sit on an exercise ball while doing homework. This allows her to move while keeping her in one place. Other suggestions include sucking on a lollipop, eating crunchy foods, listening to music (I know it seems contradictory but it works). Check out resources on sensory integration at the bookstore...one I like is "The Out of Sync Child" Although your daughter has ADHD many of the SI techniques work. Hope this helps. If you want more info feel free to email me!

Both of my children have ADHD and I used to run a daycare for only children with that because no one else wanted to care for them, too much to handle they would say. NONE of the children were on meds. The meds are basically caffeine, so instead of risking the side effects of those, sit with her and have a cup of hot tea, not decaf, or perhaps just a glass of iced tea. While taking your "time out tea time" thats when you start going over homework with her. Also, give her the tea before school. It has enough caffeine to counter-act the ADHD and she will be able to focus more. To this day my 23 and 24 yr. old children have a tea time. As do several of my smaller nephews and a couple of cousins. They had all tried the meds, and the reactions to the meds were much worse than the ADHD itself. Good luck to you.

my daughter also has adhd (along with a few other things) for a long time she could not take meds for it because it interacted with her other disorders. Do you have an IEP at school set up for her? That would be a great place to start. Also we try breaking up my childs work into smaller doses through out the week so she can stay focused. There are also a ton of resources at the library and online. Have you tried CHADD? it is a great website for parents. The best trick of all I think is to make sure you give step by step directions and wait until the first one has been followed..these kids have a tough time remembering what they are supposed to do and it helps out a lot good luck

I have ADHD myself and I cannot even function without medication! I cannot believe the difference in my ability to concentrate and pay attention since I started on meds as compared to before I started taking them. If you don't want your daughter to take medication for her ADHD I can completely understand that; I have been there before as well with my daughter(not for ADHD, though). My advice would be to have her do her homework in a quiet room with limited distractions. Make sure her workspace is organized and free of clutter.Give her one assignment to do at a time(such as one worksheet) and then move on to another when the first one is complete. As far as school goes, maybe you could talk to her teacher and see if she has any ideas on how to help her to stay focused in the classroom. Or maybe you could talk to her school about getting her an IEP. If she had an IEP, then she could get more help at school and could have accomadations made(such as extra time on tests, testing in a resource room, etc.) that could really be helpful to her. I hope that you are able to find something that works for her. Take care! -Mel:)

I know you are going to say I've tried but be patient with her. She needs you to stay on top of her while she is doing homework. If not it will be a battle and she will never get it done. Believe me I know. ADHD takes hold of not only your child but your whole family an life.
My stepson and nephew both have adhd. They have had my stepson on meds since he was 6 and he is now 9. They helped for awhile but seem to have lost their *magic*. My sister took my nephew to the Co. mental health services to be seen by a conselor and get him help with dealing with it. They didn't put him on meds. yet. They are teaching her, his teacher, and him how to deal with it by doing certain things and exercises! They also told her that giving my nephew a can of pop when he is at is worse it would chill him out without the meds. It works!!! I'm not kidding you! My sister said that if it comes to it they will try the meds. but they are trying to have less children on meds. because of the side effects. I'll tell you what, if I would have known they could have done it like that with my stepson I would have went that route. So before you have them put her on meds. please contact someone to help you.

I am not a doctor or anything but if it was me I would sit down with her and try to make interesting to her. If you have to look at it before you do it with her that way you can try and make it fun or even try to make a game out of it. I know it is probably hard to sit down with them every time they have school work but it is worth a shot.

It sounds like alot of you are just barely getting in to this, by barely I mean a few years. ADHD and ADD are a sensitive subject to me, my brother was diagnosed with it and they said I show signs of it but I refuse to do the test for it. The reason I cringe everytime some one says they or some one has it because I believe it has become over used. Doctors see it as a way to get constant income wether it be through visits or meds. Most kids just have way too much energy because they don't get as much exercise as kids did years ago due to tv, video games, computers, etc. I have seen My brother go through years upon years upon years of tests and meds and you name it he has done it. You mentioned that the meds have lost their "majic" it is because they have developed an amunity to it. That is why you have to keep switching meds. And depending on what they are getting you are actually giving them speed, which with out doctors orders is illegal. Think about that one for a second! Kids are going to defy their parents no matter what especially when it comes to their homework. If they listen well to you then fantastic but most won't. Then in school "special help" or what ever it is called now, may not be the best way to go because other kids may tease them, they are ruthless now a days. With my brother and other kids I've known a private tutor works the best. An outside thrid party that no one needs to know about most kids will listen to. And also excercise, not just good for the kids health but it runs off the extra energy that they have. Those are the two things that have worked and I'm pretty sure always will work. Give those a shot.

I would advise to talk with your family doctor or Pediatrician. Each child is different when it comes to this issue I will try other means before medication. Medication may not be for every child.

I've seen several children diagnosed with ADHD and Asbergers autism that have cleared completely after an atlas correction with an Upper Cervical doctor. FYI: 70 trillion nerves flow between the brain to the body thru the brain stem. When the atlas is moved from trauma, those nerves cause problems in the body or brain.

An Upper Cervical doctor specifically tests for an atlas problem, then specifically corrects the bone WITH NO guess work and non-interference. No drugs, no surgeries. Anyway....it seems to work for most children.

Wow!! Good for you NO Meds!!!! Instead of Meds which i don't think young kids need to be on meds. Dr. always jump to meds instead of working around it. Try some natural herbs. Or when you do homework turn TV off, sit at the Kitchen Table. Maybe try going to the libary instead.
Hope some of my info worked. Or what you can do is, Call RISE Learning Center. and ask if you can speak to someone about the situation. They work with kids all the time.
Good Luck to you,
K.
