Hi moms-

My one year old, after several months of problems is having his adenoids removed and tubes put into his ears next Friday. The dr says this is a quick procedure and they usually recover very quickly with little pain. What are your experiences with surgery like this in a baby so young? (he just turned a year old a couple weeks ago). Were they in alot of pain? How long did it take to recover? I know the dr said to expect stinky drainage, but how much comes out? I just have no knowledge of any of this and am looking for any info from anyone that has experienced this! Thanks!l

Edited: His adenoids are majorly huge...they have been since last october. He's also had several ear infections and its getting to the point that thet are constantly red and infected. Tonsils are large too but our ENT office will not do tonsils that young unless theres a major issue. he does have apnea and its due to his adenoids blocking his nasal passageway.

What can I do next?

The only "heads-up" I would give you is that most kids act very "strange" when they come out of anesthesia - but it's an expected side effect. The anesthesia doctor should warn you about this. The child acts very combative/inconsolable when they are coming out of anesthesia until they are fully awake. Just don't be alarmed - it's considered 'normal' and doesn't last long at all!

My friend's five year old just had her adenoids removed. They were SOOOO worried... She was seriously up and about, skipping around the room, within an hour.

I had my tonsils and adenoids removed a few years ago in my late 20's. It was HELL for me!!!!! Kids bounce back so quickly..............

I had tubes as a baby as well... Your child will be better off for it. It's great that your doctor is doing this now. So many go for the 'wait and see' approach.... and it becomes more of an ordeal the older we get.

I hope your baby has a quick recovery. I'm sure he will surprise you. :)

This may be too late, but you may want to try a doctor that will take the tonsils as well... You don't want to go through that ordeal twice. If they are already enlarged then that may be a sign of what's to come. Kids recover so quickly, but as adults it's hell...

My neice was 2 when she had hers out. She wanted to sleep most of the first day & whined a lot the next 2 days but ice & ice cream (popsicles) made it feel better temporarily. The drainage she had was going down her throat which made her tummy upset and her breath was horrible. Nothing drained from her ears that I remember. Good luck mama

My daughter had major sleep apnea. Her adenoids were so enlarged, that they swelled up into her nasal passages and had 100% blockage. She was 2 years old and had to have both her tonsils and her adenoids removed. If she had only had her adenoids removed, her recovery would have been extremely easy, but the removal of her tonsils did give her some discomfort for about a week. We are EXTREMELY happy that we had the surgery. Even with the swelling from the surgery, her breathing was IMMENSELY better the very first night. The apnea is a thing of the past, and she is so much more well rested. She has had no ear infections at all since the surgery.

As far as removing the tonsils, most ENT's will not do it before the child's 3rd birthday. There are a lot more complications associated with tonsil removal (my daughter was in the PICU for 4 days, nothing major, more cautionary than anything.) The only reason he removed her tonsils at the age of 2 was because she was very tall for her age. Apparently, the ENT's like to have the kids be a certain size, and most do not achieve that size until they are at least 3.

Our daughter had tubes in her ears at 10 months-old and was fully recovered before dinner that evening. She had them again in May (just after her 2nd birthday) because one had fallen out and the other wasn't draining properly - both completely normal and common. She's been ear infection free.

A neighbor's son had both adenoids and tonsils out last year after his 3rd birthday. They were prepared for days of recovery. He was outside playing as soon as they came home.

Any surgery has its risks, but have comfort that these are very routine and tend to have very few complications. The hardest part is when the nurse takes your screaming child away. 30 minutes later, he'll be back in your arms resting comfortably.

Good luck!

This does seem young compared to most of the kids who have this done.......

Have you tried the chiropractor first to see if you could help him naturally before doing surgery??? I would be hesitant to put such a young child through this unless I've explored other options first.

Good luck!

My daughter had her Adenoids, Tonsils and Tubes out. It was ten days of hell but I think that was due largly in part of the Tonsils. Her breath stunk terribly and I cried when they put her under anethesia. She was 2 1/2. Does he have sleep Apnea? That was my daughters issue (also ear and sinus infections) One does seem young. Good luck.
