Add/autistic Type Tendencies, Natural Methods That May Help?

I have a 6 yo son with a brain anomoly who has always been a bit delayed, especially in the emotional aspect of things. He seems to display some ADD symptoms (always on the go, hard time staying focused even on short tasks, can't calm down), as well as some autistic tendencies (rarely makes eye contact, delayed speech, mouths things, sensory seeking in some areas with tactile defensiveness etc.) We don't feel that he is full fledged Autistic (or even entirely on the spectrum), but are wondering if there are some natural methods that may help him with self regulation etc. We already have a sensory diet in place, and picture schedules galore, but we had heard things about gluten and food preservatives can mimic ADD/ASD symptoms and removing certain additives in the diet make a real difference. Anyone out there have any experience with this and what are your thoughts on it?

What can I do next?

Hi Takatia:

Have you investigated the possibility that your child/children have a form of environmental illness.... aggravated by exposure to synthetic chemicals and toxic compounds found in our everday bath, cleaning, laundry and other household products? I encourage you to get your hands on a book by Dr. Doris Rapp, a Board Certified Environmental Medicine specialist who has studied the exact challenges and maladies that you are experiencing with your own child/children.

"Our Toxic World", Dr. Doris J. Rapp, M.D. ISBN# 1-880509-08-3
Available at any bookstore or via Amazon.com

"Home Safe Home", by Debra Lynn Dadd ISBN# 087477-859

I spend a good deal of my time with my business raising awareness about the toxic environment within our homes, and have seen firsthand the improvement in children's (and adults) health once they have created a "non-toxic" home. (My own grandchild had ADD, and another one severe asthma - at age 3). Both have improved greatly in the past 6 months- simply by removing some of the toxic products from their home that were used on a daily basis. I encourage you to learn more about it... knowledge is power over the condition of our lives.

Hi,
I was reading your request and was wondering about your little one with restricted airway disease, does your daughter still use a pulse ox. at night or when she is sleeping? My daughter is 2.5 and still struggling with her o2 levels. She does have asthma but only when she is sick. I really haven't met or talked to another mom with a child like my daughter.
Good luck with your son, my adopted son has aspergers (a form or autism), we have found that diet does help him preservatives, dyes and a vegetarian diet has made a difference.

Look at the specific carbohydrate diet by elaine gottschall--it's not a "diet" book or a low carb thing, i promise--it's about foods that have a negative effect on certain types of illnesses and disorders. There is a special excerpt on autistic connections. Worth your time for sure.
