Activity & Lessons - Arts & Crafts (Crochet/Knitting/Quilting for Kids)

Erica's sewing center in South Bend offers lots of classes and clubs for sewing, quilting, crochet and knitting. I don't think they do general crafts. You can see them on the web www.ericas.com. It might be a great thing that you can do with your girls. I enjoy sewing, quilting and crocheting (never quite got the hang of knitting) but it's great relaxation and gives a real sense of pride to see what you can accomplish.

If you check k-mart or wal-mart (I can't remember wich I had gotten it at) you can actually get a book that teaches you how to crochet and it's fairly easy to understand to the point that you could follow it and teach her. Also at wal-mart they have shoe box craft kits with so many 100 pieces...it comes in a plastic tote about the size of a shoebox and is designed for juveniles to do different crafts. They have different shoe boxes too...you could get sand art, jewelry making, all kinds of neat little tid bits. Also depending on her age (about 6 and up)you can also get latch hook rugs. My daughter loved those when she was 6...still does. Since I have moved I don't have the address for Annie's Attick anymore, but it's a mail order craft thing and fairly inexpensive. They send a project once every 3 weeks and it's pretty neat stuff. My daughter (who is now 9) has her room decorated with the things that they sent her. Then there's always the thing of what kind of crafts did you do when you were her age like maybe at school or at home? You can get the supplies for those kind of things at any craft store and probably places like wal-mart, dollar bills or dollar general. Quilting is something that if you know how to do it, you can do it with her and make a mommy daughter quilt. Also you may be able to get on the computer and find sights that can show you how to do some of this.

I know that Jo-Ann fabrics has summer camps that teach crafts. I don't think they start until summer, but they may have some weekend classes. I would call your local store. Good Luck

Have you looked at Hobby Lobby? They have such kits made especially for small children. You also might try scholastic.com and orientaltrading.com They have alot of craft projects for children

The Hamilton County 4H has all kinds of craft stuff for kids. It may be too late but you can at least try to call them.

Check out your local JoAnne Fabrics(if they have them in KY?), they offer a wide array of classes for children and adults, from cake decorating to cross stitch, sewing and crochet classes.

4H like the other mom recommended is also very good, my sister and I use to do that when we were kids. My grandmother was a professional cake designer and we did the cake decorating stuff for awhile in 4H! I think it's great to get involved in and to this day I still like to make cakes for my son and the rest of my family. It's a lot of fun...

Another place to try is local craft stores like Michael's or Hobby Lobby. Michael's often has Saturday classes just for kids for a minimal fee. Also, if you are involved in a church, seek out some of the older women...they usually LOVE it when young girls try to learn the "old" crafts. I have to admit I learned all of this from my grandmother, and it creates such a great bond. Or, you might even put an ad in the paper...I just think learning it one on one like that will enrich young girls so much. Good luck!

Hi! I know this is an older post but we found some great craft books in the childrens section of the library and also there is a great website that I think is through the about.com for knitting and crocheting. The knitting one is knittinghelp.com or something similar to that. There is a lady that has a couple close up videos of her doing the stitches and she does each one a couple times and goes slowly and explains it as she is going. Happy crafting!
