My son will be turning 1 at the end of the month and we're having friends and family over. Any suggestions for kid-friendly activities? The kids range in age from 1-4 yrs old. Do you think dyeing eggs is too much?

What can I do next?

I would keep it simple with coloring, maybe stickers, balloons, bubbles, play dough- that kind of thing- and avoid activities that require structure and will probably make a huge mess.

Hi C.
I personally do think egg dyeing is to much. If you decide to dye eggs please tell parents ahead of time so they can bring grungy clothes to wear.

You can buy some chunky beads and string and have them make necklaces or use cheerios or froot loops.

I think egg dyeing is too much for that many kids and that age range. Also, I don't see 1 & 2 year olds being able to participate in any "organized" games. I am going off of how my own son acts at 14 months, so take it for what it's worth.

I was just at a birthday party where the older kids did dress-up. Even the boys got into it--they had cowboy hats and superhero capes. A couple of kids even came in old Halloween costumes.

We have done pin the tail on the donkey, and bean bag tosses are always fun. I am pretty sure you can get both cheap through oriental trading co. Also a fun idea is the pull tab panita (sp) you can find them at Nobbies or factory card outlet, they are a little more pricey than the panitas that you wack with a stick but so much better for little kids and you can do them inside.

Check out Michael's craft store. They always have fun activites for kids of all ages. A few weekends ago, my in-laws had all 4 grandkids (ages 1.5-6)I sent along a foam egg decorating kit from Michaels. They loved it and now we all have some kid-made Easter decorations. Good Luck.

Hi C., What fun! Your baby turning 1!
We did some dyeing of eggs last Spring when my boys were 2 and 4. I think they were a little young. They did a few but their attention span was pretty short :-) I think my mom and I ended up dyeing most of them and then the kids were stop by the table every once in awhile. :-) They had more fun hiding the eggs and trying to find them. Like a big game of hide-and-seek. We also hid some plastic eggs with little treats inside them and the boys thought that was so much fun to see what was inside the eggs and also fun to count how many eggs they found each time. If the kids you are having are pretty reserved and the parents are up for dyeing eggs, you could probably make it work if you had each kid sitting on a parent's lap and helping them do each step of the dyeing, etc.
And honestly, the kids that have come to my boys parties when they were younger, most enjoyed playing with the presents (or existing toys) that the birthday boy opened and running around with the balloons. It didn't seem to take too much to entertain them when they were small.
Hope this helps some! Have a fun party!
Tami

I was worried about the same thing when my son turned one but most of the kids were within a few months of his age. We only had one that was around 3. I didn't play any games, we just utilized the tons of toys we had and that seemed to work perfectly in occupying everyone. Even the older child still found some things she could play with. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Something simple like maybe a bowling game or a bean bag toss would be fine if you still feel the need to do something. Or you could just let them color pictures. One suggestion ...keep the party moving because the younger ones get burnt out from all the stimulation!

i agree I think dying eggs is a bit much to do with this age group. Keep it simple. Bean bag toss.
Pin the tale on the donkey. Drop the clothes pin in the bucket.
