I went for my fetal scan yesterday, the tech reported to the dr. that she saw three markers the spine the brain and the heart, Now tomorrow I have to see the perinaltologist, should I be worried? How accurate are techs? The markers indicated spina bifida and I am very scared has anyone had this happen to them?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I went today to see the perinaltologist and it was confirmed that my baby has spina bifida. He said it was a small opening at the very end of the tail bone about an inch long. He said so far the brain was ok. I am so devestated. I am going to UCLA for a second opinion just to give me peace of mind! I can't believe I am facing the decision to terminate or keep him, this is killing me and I think it will kill me to terminate him, thats just killing my baby I mean I am 20 in a half weeks. I am scared to have a handicapped kid, but I don't know what to do!!

Its hard to say from your note. It depends on what "markers" she was referring to, what scan you were having (i.e. how far along you are) and how well trained she was.

Being referred to a Peri is not an indication that something is horribly wrong however. It could just be for a follow up scan since their equipment is so much more sensitive and detailed.

Here's hoping once the peri takes a peek all is well!

Tech usually are not supposed to say what they think. They are supposed to let the doctor read the ultrasounds and talk to you because the techs can do just what they did to you.. Make you nervous. Please try not to worry until you hear the doctor.
When I was pregnant with twins, I had ultrasounds every month until they were born and the techs would never really answer my worrisome questions, as they would let the dr speak to me about those questions. Best wishes~

Of course you are going to feel some concern about this. My rule of thumb is not to worry about these things. If you start worrying now and it turns out that there isn't a real problem, you've wasted your time worrying. If it turns out that there is a problem, worrying won't take it away. You will then need to simply take the steps necessary toward correcting the problem or learning how to deal with it. Worry is a waste of time. But I do know how concerned you must be, and am not trying to downplay that at all. Just try to keep a positive attitude, because it's better for your own well-being.

It's so hard not to be preoccupied and worried about something like this. I'd say that tech was not very professional because they couldn't offer a diagnosis at the time, all they handed you was a pile of worry.
Think of it this way: you just don't have all the information yet. You're waiting to get more information and when you have it you may have choices you didn't expect to have. But until then, I would follow Betty's advice. Worry won't help the situation and will only sap your energy.
Take a walk with a friend somewhere beautiful, get a pedicure, ask for a back rub, and be kind to yourself.
And don't forget you can always ask for a second opinion.
Best wishes.

my sister had an abnormal US, they saw some cysts in the baby's brain and something in the baby's heart(can't remember if it was a hole). after a few weeks, they did another ultrasound and the baby was fine, you can imagine how those weeks were for my sister. she was a wreck until she finally delivered at 42 weeks.
Her baby was perfect and is a now a perfectly healthy 15 month old little girl.

I am assuming, you mean markers fro Downs Syndrome? They are most likely sending you there, because they are specially trained in high risk, or pregnancies with chromosomal irregularities. Their equipment, is more sensitive and they have a really trained eye.
