A Thoughtful Gift

My mom just went through a double mastectomy too and some of the things she got were books and movies ( or gift certificates for movie rentals), lotions and body soaps, but one of the things she appreceatied the most were some gift certificates to some local resturants. Several people brought dinners for the first few weeks she was home, but the gift certificates came in handy when she went back to work and was just to tired to cook! Anything you give your friend will be apprciated! And just let her know that you are there for her if she needs anything1

I recently had a friend go through a simular situation. If your friend is religious she would appreciate this. I purchased a cross from a local craft stored. Decorated it with pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness.Placed it in a gift basket with a soothing pink candle, framed prayers or poems, Pink lotions, soaps and other pink bath products. I celowrapped it placed a pretty pink bow on it and she loved it. I hope this helps. M.

My aunt just had cancer and I made our family her friends and co workers cancer bracelets for everyone to wear while she was treating. My Aunt loved the idea, I made her a special one. I got the beads, charms and made about 30 of them and each and everyone pitched in to cover my cost. Her office also took up money for her to go get her a wig.

One of the most raved about gifts that I ever give as an individual or from a group is a very large fruit basket. We have several large high-end sort of grocery stores near by that also have floral departments in them. Call one in your area and ask if they make fruit baskets. We typically spend $30-40 and you can not believe all the fruit that is put in them. You could spend more if you collect it from the office. Everyone loves fresh fruit and especially when recuperating from any illness or surgery. For the most part, as adults, it's hard to buy anything too personal and a gift card somewhere is nice but sort of seems impersonal especially when she may not feel like shopping right now.

my gf had breast cancer also, i gave her a smoothie king gift card for a smoothie and a pedicure gift card so when she was feeling up to it she could go and have 1 hr. of pampering.

Get a couple key rings and attache a varity of gift cards to the ring and then make another with phone numbers for easy access for when she might need something quickly then I would make up a basket with several things that are favorites of hers with other items such as a U pillow,lotions,puzzles,magizines,comforting music,a small scrapbook with everyone's picture in it with abit of soothing words to give her a lift, homemade stress ball, other pampering items, Aloe socks and even a journal(make it homemade from the heart) for when she needs to express herself. Maybe some of her friends could make up meals that can be frozen and put in her freezer for quick meals, icecream or shaved flavored ice for a special treat for a pick me up!

I love the website etsy.com. It's all handmade items. I just went on there and typed in breast cancer, and a bunch of items popped up. I saw a nice neclace that had a ribbon and the word strength. That was just one of many. I like the other ideas people have given you too. I just love this site and can always find something unique on there.

I would think some nice body products some thing to make her still feel womanly, or some hard candy some thing to help with her stomach problems that treatment can bring on, how about a turban for her head or a stylish hat to deal with the lost of her hair. I would also try in find ta couple of books First You Cry, I wear lipstick to my mastectomy, or the book by Fran Dresser about her fight with cancer to encourage her. How about a family pass to some where so she can look forward to a good time with her love ones. Does she have a fav author or does she had a hobby she likes to do she can do these want she feels like it but not strong enough to do something that takes a lot of energy. Also I would set up a group to send her a card or something small each week or two while she is out of work just to kept her spirit up.

I would think something usefull, like a gift certificate for a manicure and pedicure, or to a resturant, book store, car wash, oil change, house cleaning, would be more appriciated. Anything that she can use during her recovery to make it a little easier.
