A Few Questions About a 6 Month Old

My 6 month old, has yet to learn how to sit up. I'm a bit concerned on this, because they say most babies can do this by now, and his sister was able to. When i try to put him in the sitting position he wiggles to be on the floor on his belly, he is so determined to crawl.

2nd my son seems to get real gassy after having soilds or formula. His sister was lactose in tolerant, but has shown no signs intil now. Could he be allgeric to his baby food? Or am i feeding him to much at once possiably (he can really chow down some baby food), we try burping him, but sometimes doesn't help.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
J.

So What Happened?

Well, after considering everyones wonderful advice about his gas, i figured it out i believe. I ended up changing his nipples on his bottles to a faster flow, reason being is i had a theroy that the other nipples were making him suck so hard he was inhaling air. Since i have changed the nipples, he has had no gas today, and has had baby cereal with no problems.
Also, he has had much practice on sitting up, and i believe will be on his way in a couple of weeks or so :)
thanks everyone

I really wouldn't worry too much that he isn't sitting up. My 10 month old didn't start sitting up or crawling until she was 8 months old. I talked to her doctor and he just said that every baby has their own schedule. As for the gassiness, it might be too much food. My daughter is the same way. She can chow down on food when she wants to. I try to slow her down and give her either apple juice or something else to drink in between foods and that seems to help.

don't worry about him sitting up yet. when i was 9 my mom had my sister. she did everything really early. early enough that i thought my son was ( i feel bad for saying this) slow. at six months old he had not rolled over, sat up, crawled, and his only and first word was bob bob for sponge bob. i took him to the doctor and explained all of this to them and they kinda chuckled and told me not to worry that girls develop much faster than boys do and he will do all of these things in good time. that day he rolled over for the first time, he was almost 7 months old, he didn't start crawling until almost 8, and didn't say mama until 8 1/2. the first time he said mama i got so excited and he loved it so much that he was saying new words left and right. he turned out just fine and your son will do the same just give him some time. my daughter on the other hand started turning over at 2 months and started crawling at 4 1/2.

All babies accomplish things at a different rate. A friend of mine has a 9 1/2 month old that doesn't crawl yet, so don't be alarmed. Have you thought about maybe buying him something to help him sit up.
Regarding the gassiness: Have you contacted his physican about it? Have you tried gas drops? My pharmacist suggested using the Equate brand drops at Wal-Mart, they are half the price of the other and work better (well at least on my kid they did). Maybe ask his physican about reflux or something like that. It could be possible that if he's got a stomach issue going on (could be causing the extra gas) that laying on him stomach helps with the pain/discomfort and sitting up may put pressure on his stomach in the wrong spots and make him uncomfortable.
Try feeding him less food more often to see if that might help. At this point he really shouldn't be getting to much variety in his diet with baby food. You might try something like applesauce or peaches, they might not be quite harsh on his tummy as some other food. It could possibly be a slight case of GERD or Reflux.
I hope you find something that works.

When I had my daughter I had the same problem. She didn't start to sit up on her own until she was about eight months. My son however could sit up at six months. My son was walking at 10 months while it took my daughter until she was thirteen months. My son had two teeth before he was six months and my daughter didn't get her first tooth until she was nine months. Every child is different. Both of my kids were very gassy as well when they were babies. What I did was just add an extra ounce of water to all thier bottles and I gave them gas drops when the gas was to the point that they were fussy. I just put the gas drops in thier bottles. Sometimes the formula can give them gas or it could be the new baby food has some getting use to. Most of the dinner jars made my daughter very gassy and so she ate alot of cereal and ate the single vegetable jars and lots of fruits. My kids are 6 and 3 and have no known allergies to any foods at this time. My kids eventually out grew it. I hope this helps a little. If not and you still feel concerned maybe you should ask your son's doctor.

Hello, I have a 2 year old and 6 year old and an 8 month old. I am here to tell ya they all do different things at different ages. My girls were sitting up and almost walking by 6 months. My eight month old boy is just now starting to table walk and just starting sitting up on his own this last month. I was concerned also, I've found that the girls do things, well, everything much faster than boys. He also doesn't have any teeth yet which his sissys had months ago at his age. Kids are all different, they tell me, and now I believe! Also some children just can't handle solids yet, despite what doctors tell you. Maybe your child isn't like the mass majority of children who start solids at this age, just like sitting up he may not be ready to handle all of that food. Key thing is to remember nobody(not even doctors) knows everything about YOUR baby! Alot of time we give our babies allergies and lactose intolorence by giving them solids too early. Hope this is helpful!

My two-and-half-year old did not sit until he was 10 months old. He started walking at 22 months. Now, he is learning how to jump and run. My daughters were both walking by their first birthdays. After stressing out for months and months, I am now realizing that each is an individual with individual talents and needs. I have thrown out every developmental chart and I just pay attention to each child's needs as things come along. Make sure that he has an opportunity to roll around and build muscles and he will sit when he is ready to do so.

Coincidentally, he is lactose intolerant and I am also suspecting a soy sensitivity.

Yep my dauther didn't start sitting up on her own, without ANY help at all until she was 7 months old. All of my kids are gassy kids too and I think a lot of babies in general are gassy. If he's uncomfortable, look for those drops the lady before my response suggested. I'm sure your doc would suggest it first anyways before doing some painful tests on him. He is probably getting closer to the age of where he can start to tolerate foods better and not get so gassy. Maybe give it a bit more time if you can. My kids all have spitting up issues and about the age that they are crawling is when they stopped spitting up. Unsure why since they were sitting up before they were crawling. Who knows...

Hello! This may not be your childs issue but You might get your babies vision checked. My nephew was very delayed on all motor skills and development. Didn't sit up until almost nine months, crawled at 13 months but never on all fours more like scooted on his belly and never reached for toys or food. At 15 months he still wasn't walking. We finally were told to get his vision checkd at 15 months and found out he was very near sighted. He couldn't see anything and therefore when he tried to sit, crawl or walk he would get very dizzy. He finally just quit trying. After the problem was discovered he got glasse and within 3 weeks he was feeding himself, walking good, playing with toys and very normal activities. Now he is four and unstopable. His vision is even starting to improve. He is a normal rambunctious plato eating 4 yr old. Just a thought you may want to check out!

Hi J.! The best thing to do with babies is just pat attention to them and go with their particular speed and style. Every baby is different and unique. The suggestions and standards you are looking at are merely guidelines, not written in stone. This is a mistake the modern day mother makes frequently. Sounds like your baby likes to be on his belly! let him! Maybe he knows better what he needs than the so called experts. If he is happy and clean and cries when he is upset, then he is perfect. Six months old! He has plenty of time. Let him be himself, offer new foods, keep an eye on him for reactions, always offer water, he'll sit up when he's good and ready to sit up. All you have to do is love him.

J., my 7 month old daughter is the opposite of your son. She doesn't want to do anything but sit up. If you lay her on her tummy to teach her crawling, she squeals and squirms. Our Parents as Teachers Rep gave me some peace when she said that children this age often give up working on one activity to hone in on another. Our child's desire to do one thing outweighs the other - and they are PERFECTLY NORMAL!

As for gas, my daughter had a lot too. She is finally starting to get over it. I asked our ped and he said, "Some babies are just jet propelled." Not helpful, but I quit worrying about it.
