A Couple of Exercise Suggestions, Thoughts, Etc.

hi there! I found a nearby rec center that offers unlimited exercise classes for $20/month! yay! so awesome and so excited! They have zumba, yoga, tai chi, and starting next month kick boxing. :)
anyway, gotta couple easy questions....
This is the last week of classes for THREE weeks! I just got started going (LOVE IT) but I know me, if I get out of the habit, I'm screwed, lol. So, my plan for those weeks is to take walks w/my son but he dawdles and I can't really go THAT fast. I have an hour long Belly Dancing DVD, Tae Bo (yes, old school I know, lol), and a Pilates DVD. My little one's 5 and independent, but I don't see him completely leaving me alone while I exercise for an HOUR. They have childcare at rec center so that hasn't been a prob. Would it be too much for t.v. for him to watch cartoons during that time? I'm thinking of doing it 6-7ish each night. And doing it after he's in bed? Well hell, I'm exhausted by that point too after working FT all day & have other things to get done (dishes, laundry, prep for next day)
!
1.) What's the best thing I could have him do while I work out?
ALSO....
2.) I have a long torso, a belly pouch (ugh, part of why I'm going though!) and need a LONG tank top so when I lift my arms my nasty gut doesn't flop out everywhere! Know where I can get one? Approx $10--$15??
AND...
3.) Also w/Zumba, bouncing galore on those post-baby boobs of mine and I find myself holding my gut & boobs so they don't go everywhere! Any suggestions on a STABLE sports bra?

See, this was an easy question!

Thanks for your help! :)

So What Happened?

Suz T. - omg, lmao "big bazonkas"! Good suggestion on cheap bras, I could wear two at a time! :) THank you!

I Like Yellow - PERFECT idea of having "workout time toys", he would love that. We label a lot of time increments, "settle down time", "quiet rest time" so he'll love that! thank you! :)

i still use my old tae bo VHS tape sometimes too!
will your son work out with you for part of the time? maybe he can do the warm up, then pause it while you put on a cartoon for him, then bring him back in for the cool-down.
i absolutely think the benefits of you keeping up with your workout regimen outweigh the negligible harm of an hour of tv.
but if that doesn't work, just break up your routine into 4 15-minute segments and work them in throughout the day when you can keep your little guy busy with other stuff. it's not as good as balls-to-the-wall straight-through workout, but far, far better than nothing.
old navy has long, cheap tank tops, which i also prefer.
i use cheap fruit of the loom sports bras that come in packs of 3. they don't last long as i wear them everywhere and run a lot, and my big bazonkas give
'em a workout. but i find them far more comfortable than more expensive sports bras, and they're cheap enough that i don't mind replacing them.

It's probably a matter of personal opinion, but I don't think an hour of age-appropriate TV is a problem for a 5-year-old, especially if he doesn't have a lot of electronics at other times during the day. Just don't let it get too close to his bedtime because electronics before bed can mess up sleep. Is there something he could do with you? Jump around or dance somehow? Special toys reserved just for your exercise time?

I like my Victoria Secret sports bra. It's not easy to snap (it's a combo pullover/underwire/snap), but it's very supportive. They have different styles with varying levels of support and I have the most supportive one. It isn't cheap, but I would also check with Athleta. They have some great sports products and I've been very happy with the level of support in the swimsuit type I purchased from Athleta. I don't know about the tank top you ask about, but that sounds like something Athleta might have too. It would be more than $10-15 though. Athleta is expensive, but they do often have promotions.

Happy exercising!

I love Tae Bo! Did it yesterday, in fact. :)
My kids (5 and 3) will hang out, play with their own toys, watch TV, AND exercise with me for a while. My 5 yr old will actually grab my 3lb weights and do the work with me. The 3 yr old will just play with toys that we keep in that room. Just make sure the house is safe, tell them where you will be, and let them have free reign for an hour. It's not the end of the world if they watch TV or a movie for an extra hour. It's just not.

For tops, double up on the sports bra. I have DDs and that's what I've always done. No bounce, and discomfort. And I personally like Old Navy's fitness line. They have a couple of tops out now with bubble hems to hide a lot of imperfections!

Good bottoms can also help with the belly issue. I've had 3 single pregnancies and a twin pregnancy and, well, my belly reflects them all. When I work out, I wear good cotton underwear that actually goes to just below my waist (vs. the low-rise bikinis) and Nike Dri-fit running pants or running capris - they go all the way up to my waist and hold everything in without being binding or pinching (no stuffed sausage look). Then I wear a tank top or dri-weave t-shirt on top. Target has some good workout wear and you might be able to find longer tops there.

I work out with a friend every morning for a little over an hour, and I have a one year old walking around all over the place and sometimes crawling on me when we're on the floor. Most of the time, we can get through the entire workout without any problems; occasionally, he interrupts beyond what we're able to adjust for. If your child is fairly independent, it shouldn't be a problem to have him playing nearby. Even if he comes to talk to you, don't worry about it. You might even be able to convince him to join you. My older kids will do that occasionally when they see us exercising. It can be fun (and good for a laugh or two).
