911 Info for People with No Home Phone (Cell Only)?

We were paying $45 a month for our home phone and $150 for our cell phone plan so we decided to just use our cells for the regular phone. That was fine until I thought about what if my 4 year old needs to call 911? She would have to turn on the screensaver, unlock the cell by swiping it, then hit "phone" and THEN call 911. In an emergency I don't think she'd remember all that. If we keep the home phone but with no service will she still be able to still use it just for 911? Seems like I heard this before. I know it's unlikely she'd ever have to do it, but I'm sort of a safety freak. Any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

My kids never had trouble using my cell phone, even when I didn't want them too. :(

Yes I have a smart phone so there is a specific button you have to hit twice. I think they have been able to open the phone long before they knew how to use it.

I would be more concerned if they could find the darn thing if they needed it.

Oh another idea is if you have an old inactive cell phone keep it plugged in as the "emergency" phone. Even an inactive cell, without the sim card even, will place a 911 call.

I have heard that before about home phones still being able to dial 911 even disconnected.
BUT I know for a FACT that any old cell phone can be kept charged and dial 911 anytime. The problem is older cells don't have the tracking technology that the newer phones have, so make sure the kiddos know their address.

We only have cells.
My 2.5 y/o already knows how to swipe it to unlock, so I am not concerned about it. What I am worried about it teaching her an address and how to give info in an emergency situation with a cell phone.
In the state of California you are not transfered to emergencey services when you call 911, you are transfered to the Highway Patrol. So it's important to tell them you are on a cell and you need 911. Also, when you call 911 from a home phone they can track your location...but they can't with a cell.
In most areas as long as the phone is in working use (home or cell) you can dial 911 without having phone service, I would find a phone you know for sure works, and double check with your local law enforcement that the call will go through, and have it as an emergencey only phone.
Where I grew up they couldn't track our location...so our parents tacked up our address on a post card right next to the phone in case of emergencies. I am planning on doing the same "just in case".
Good Luck. =)

ON your locked phone there should be a button/icon that says "emergency calls/ 911". You push it, it asks are you sure? you push yes, and voila.

My android has a single button you have to push then dial 911. It only works for 911 too so I don't worry about it. I have taught my 5 year old how to dial 911.

yep, I know from personal experience. When I was younger we just moved to a new house. We had no phone service but had a phone. We were playing around wrestling with my dad. I ran to the phone, dialed 911 and said "help my daddy is beating my brother up" Slammed the phone down. With in minutes a police showed up at our house! Don't worry I did get in trouble for playing with 911!

My concern is more them knowing our address under stress than dialing the cell. Our home phone has a tracker set up so as soon as they dial 911, it sends them our address. That is the only reason we still have a home phone.

Any cell phone that does not have service and is charged is able to make a call to 911.
HTH I know because my son did it one day. He just wanted to make a call on the play cell phone. I had no idea that the phone could do that

I've heard that when you don't have a landline you should register your cel phone with the police (I dont' know if you can do that everywhere). Basically, when you call from a landline and hang up, police know where the call was coming from and they either call back or stop by. When you register your cel phone the police will know the address that it is affiliated with.

I think if you practice with your 4 year old, she'll be able to use the phone. Just make sure you keep it always at the same spot (in a charger) so that she knows where it is.

I am pretty sure if you have a phone to plug in, there will be a dial tone but only 911 will be accessible! Also, do you have a security system? Ours has a notify police, fire, and ambulance button. Just a thought.
Also. if uses the cell make sure he knows his address!

I don't know the details but phone companies offer a service where you keep the home phone but you can only place 911 calls and I think receive calls or something like that. Maybe ask your phone company about limited service. I think it's only like $5 if that. I have a family member that went that route when they were talking of getting rid of it.
I don't know what type of cell phone you have but a great deal of them can make 911 calls without needing the passcode to unlock it or anything. I have the iPhone and all I have to do is push the "home button" to bring up the passcode screen and there is a button on the bottom left that says "emergency call". My kids all know how to work my phone, including the 2 year old. Go over it a few times with your daughter and it'll sink in fast.

You can get basic phone for 20.00 in the DFW area thru AT&T. No bells and whistles, just a phone. I consider it like insurance, I pay for it for a peace of mind. There is no way I would depend on a 4 year old (even worse, a 2.5 year old as posted below) to make a 911 call, no matter how much we practiced - I would never put that burden on my kids. My kids are 10 & 13 and half the time they don't know where their cell phones are and I certainly don't expect them to have to find mine or their dad's.
