9 Week Old Sleep Problems

Hello,
My 9-week old bottlefed son will not fall asleep at night! We had been sleeping with him in our bed and my husband is not totally comfortable with it. It takes him about 2 full hours in his crib to finally go out. We have to constantly go into the room to give him his pacifier because he wakes up when he spits it out. Once he is asleep he is out - but it takes forever! There has to be an easier way!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

ok, it has been a couple of weeks and i think everything is getting a little better. kyle goes in his crib, which has been in our bedroom, around 8-8:30pm. it still takes a couple of hours to get him really asleep but i don't have to go in the bedroom every 4 minutes now to give him back him pacifier. we bought the fisher price rainforest crib attachment and he absolutely loves it! we only keep on the sound and the lights - the music actually seemed to keep him up. the sound is of birds and water and crickets and so it is even nice for us to fall asleep to!! things are getting better, so i can only hope it keeps in the right direction! thanks everyone!

I went through the same thing with my daughter. I took away the pacifier all together and suffered eith the noise until she grew accustomed to the new way of sleeping. It will get worse and then it will get better.

most newborns don't sleep through the night, normally because they sleep all day. you could try playing some soft music so that he doesn't feel alone. they say classical music is soothing for a baby and by having the baby listening to it throughout the night it also enhances their brain functions and is said to stimulate the brain and make them smarter and allow them to learn at a faster rate. not sure if this was what you were exactly looking for but it soothes the baby. you could also try like a bedtime baby wash or lotion i think with camomille its supposed to relax and soothe them helping them to sleep.

My 8 month old daughter does the same thing with spitting out her pacify and cryign when she realizes it's not there. The only two suggestions I have for that is to deal with it, or try not using the pacify at all. If yoru baby has grown accustomed to the feel of your body close to him when he's falling asleep, being placed in a big empty crib can be very scary for him. Try rocking him to sleep first, or swaddling him tightly in a blanket to get teh sensation that he's got soemthign close by. You may also want to try one of those bears that has the heartbeat sounds in them. They worked wonders for my sister. Good Luck. I know it can be tough.

I have an 8 month old and when he was that young his crib was in my room, next to my bed and even then he had trouble also falling asleep in there and also even up until now he will not sleep all night in his crib but the ironic part about it is that he sleeps all night in his pack and play, I personally think because its much more confined than his crib, his crib is big and he has alot of space, Because when he slept in the bed with me or his father he slept all night because he was close to a body and was kinda combined in his little space, so if you hace a pack and play try that but the one with the bassinet on top. Good Luck

do you have a swing....we let our daughter sleep in the swing when we were transfering her from the bassinet to the crib...the crib seemed so big for her...so she slept in her swing for a few weeks then eventually we let her fall asleep in the swing and then picked her up and put her in the crib....i talked to a lot of moms about it...i felt guilty letting her sleep in the swing..but i was so happy to have her sleep..and me too...so she moved to the crib without a problem....and is a great sleeper...do what works for you...also we used classical music

A. d, welcome to the wonderful world of parenthood, and let me be the first to tell you that there is no easier way! You just took the long road and now you have to walk it...

You are going to have to try different things to find out what works for you, it could be starting a routine with a before bedtime soothing bath and a lullaby, it could be 15 to thirty minutes of snuggle time until he is asleep, where as i don't suggest having your baby sleep with you (believe me - when they're three you'll regret it) you spending some time with hime by the crib until he falls asleep might be benefical to the both of you. Try a bedtime routine, it's never too early... GOOD LUCK!

9 weeks is still very young so there are really no standard sleep habits at this point. I would make sure he is full before you put him down and try putting a fan in the room. You could also try putting him down a bit later. If it is too close to his last nap, he might not be sleepy yet. A swing might help as long as he is secure in it. You could also let him fall asleep in his carrier. That worked for us when we were at our wits end. Good luck.

Nurse him to sleep. You may have issues later when you have to wean him. But, for now it works! And what could be better than rocking and nursing your baby to sleep. I wouldn't give it up for anything!

My suggestion would be to get a bassinet for your room and try him in it until he's a little older. Being in the same room with you, where he is able to her your breath sounds may comfort him. Also, a bassinet is more cinfining than a crib, which will make him feel more secure (remember, he spent 9months inside that tiny area in you and now he probably doesn't feel as secure and snuggled as he did then).
