My baby is 9 months old and still will not sleep through the night. He is breastfed and usually ends up sleeping in our bed( i get tired of getting up) and he wants to eat like every 2 hours. He is also very gassy. For four nights I would not take him out of his crib to see if the gas was coming from his eating too much and he was still gassy and didn't sleep. I am not sure what to do. I am exhausted. I know he doesnt need to nurse at all in the night but nothing else comforts him. If I could take care of the gas I think it would be easier. I tried Mylicon drops and they did not help. I even propped the head of his crib up. Any suggestions would be more than welcome, I haven't slept in over a year!(prego insomnia) I also do not eat anything that could cause him gas. This gas problem is new. He has never slept through the night.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well thanks for all the great suggestions! I gave him yogurt with his dinner and gripe water after his last nursing, and he still had gas. I am at a loss. I ate nothing yesterday that I haven't eatin in the past 9 months. I will be calling the doctor today to see what she says. Thanks again all you wonderfully helpful moms!!!

Try mylicon drops. They were a God-send for me. Also, you need to watch what you're eating because it will affect your breastmilk and, in turn, make him gassy as well. He's eating constantly because he knows he has a tummy ache & he's trying to fix it the only way he knows how.

Babies will prefer bed sharing to sleeping on their own - they aren't mature enough to understand why they are alone when they need Mommy.

Every 2 - 3 months the infant goes thru a growth spurt... around the 9 month mark is a very common growth spurt. He's cluster feeding, will seem unsatisfied but is truly priming your body for the next phase. THIS IS GOOD - since you need your body to produce more now for your growing infant.

Good way of moving gas- if it really is gas - is to bicycle the legs and pump the legs gently - like how you walk, bend, etc. Movement gets bm's and gas out.

Nurse often side lying and sleep when baby does. You'll get much more sleep!

Try gripe water. I never did Mylicon as I wanted something more natural for my baby. I use Baby Bliss gripe water - it's available at walgreens. All natural ingredients- It helps settle their little tummies. Not sure whats causing it in your son, but this worked for us whenever my son is gassy. We were told back then we can give 1/2 tsp everyday (I think my son was 2-3 months old then), but I just use once in a while whenever I feel he is gassy.

You might try Colic Calm (http://www.coliccalm.com/) or Hyland's Chamomilla tabs. In fact, the Hyland's Kids Kit (which has Chamomilla and lots of other remedies) is a great resource for all kinds of illnesses. I recommend it highly. http://www.hylands.com/products/kidskit.php

What else is he eating other than BM? Is that making him gassy?

Can you try yo-baby yogurt? It has active cultures and may help in the gassiness.

Take a warm wash cloth and rub his tummy with it in a circular motion to relieve the gas bubbles or guide them along. Give him a massage before bed. That may help him relax.

I had used mylicon drops with my infant but when she was about 2-3 months old. They did work well.

Mine didn't sleep through the night too. We co-sleep to make it easier. She slept through the night only after I stopped nursing her. So thats ok, in my opinion. Though I do know that you too need to rest.

my daughter never slept through the night....still doesn't...but Itsy Bitsy Yoga(it's a book someone gave me) did the trick for her gas, which lead to maybe 4-6 hours of sleep. It has movements that aid in digestion and relax baby to help sleep. Gripe water was hit or miss for us, but worth a try.
Good luck!!
