9 Month Old with Sleep Issues

I have a 9 month old little boy that has been having a lot of trouble sleeping at night. He wakes up about 30 minutes after we put him down and then we go through the process every 30 minutes for about 2 hours. After that he's up every two hours. This has been going on for the past couple of months and I don't know what else to do. We've tried letting him cry it out. We've tried just patting his back while he's in bed. I feel like we've tried just about everything. At first I thought it was because he was learning new skills, but most of the time that he's crying he's still laying down and trying to sleep. It's not night terrors because he's aware of us when we go in the room. The only thing I've found that will calm him down is to hold him in a sitting up position on me. Could this be some sort of reflux problem? He doesn't spit up that much. He does projectile vomit if he takes a bottle too fast, but I don't think that's really related. We're out of ideas and I'm hoping someone has some idea of what we can do. Oh, I forgot to mention that it seems like all of this started right after he had two ear infections. We treated them and the doctor said they had cleared up, so the timing might just be coincidence. Right now I'm looking for any excuse possible so I think I'm grasping at straws.

What can I do next?

Well I had a projectile vomiter and he too had acid reflux so that could be a possibility. It's certainly worth looking into and going on a trial run of meds if you are game.

As for the ear infections, I would recommend following up with an ENT. Only reason being is that my kiddo only had 2 ear infections and 4 peditricians completely MISSED that he had fluid on his eardrums and couldn't hear right...it took a speech therapist to actually diagnose it because of his delayed speech. What the pediatrician might be seeing is only on the surface where the ENT can see much further into the ear...I would certainly check into that. Ear infections are typically the most logical thing I would think of that would be keeping him up.

Another idea you might want to try if you haven't already is some kind of white noise in his room...a fan, humidifier, space heater, even a small radio/CD on repeat...SOMETHING that will make noise constantly throughout the night. I found that my kids always slept better with something like that. Also, my daughter was really fond of the Fisher Price Aquarium that we attached to her crib...we would hear her at all times of the night pushing the button for the music and lights...she found it really comforting...so much so she wanted me to attach it to her big girl bed when she moved from the crib.

Finally, is it possible he might also be cutting a tooth? Stick your finger in his mouth and run over his gums...if you hit a sensitive spot you might have your answer there...Orajel and some Motrin will help get him down for the night in that case. Hope something helped here.

This definitely sounds like tummy upset or silent reflux. Have you introduced any new foods? Any food allergies in the family that you know of? Try to get him to burp more often before he nods off, although I know he may be a little old for that. Bouncing him while putting him back to sleep may help. Is he having ANY congestion that may explain this? You may see if the Mylicon drops will help. He is a little old for that, but it won't hurt. HTH

Good Morning J., I agree with Linda. Ear infections do strange things to little folks. Also the CD on Repeat works wonders. We use the Baby Einstein Classical one.
Both of our youngest gr son's still love to hear the music playing in back ground.

If he is cutting teeth the night time orajel is the best.
God Bless and I hope you get some relief soon

Our 10 month old has finally outgrown his acid reflux, but it was a nightmare when he had it! We finally put him on meds and special formula, which helped tremendously! If he's projectile vomiting, I would say he's got acid reflux. Your Pediatrician should be able to help you in fast order in that regard. You might also see if his sleeping patterns are changing...he might require more/less sleep during the day, to help him be rested enough to sleep through the night, as well. I've had to switch my son's nap schedules a few times, to help him sleep more comfortable through the night. The cd or background noise is a great idea, too. My son loves his soft lullabys playing all night, and during naps, too. Another thing, and you'll have to see what works for you, but my son likes for me to hold/rock him to sleep initially. It helps him unwind and relax, and he's more apt to sleep through the night, than if he falls asleep on his own for whatever reason. I'm sure it's just a comfort thing for him. Hope that helps! Good luck!
