Hello Moms. My 9 month old daughter has had a dry skin area on the top part of her thighs in the back. it has turned into a rash and just when i think it's going away...it doesn't. It's not a diaper rash, nor is it in that area. it hasn't gotten worse either. We've been using cetaphil cleanser for her baths which has always done a fantastic job with keeping her skin clean and soft but it's not helping to clear it up. I am looking for some advice for what i can use on it. she has no other problems.....no fever, no itching/scratching. do you think i should try neosporin? any suggestions will be helpful. thanks.
my 6 month old son has the same thing...The dr. told us to use a little bit of hydrocortizon on it. I hope this helps.
when it comes to stubborn rashes, i have repeatedly found that less is more. cetaphil is a little strong, i would switch to natural products for a while, i love california baby, they have a calming diaper area spray that is awesome. but for now, to get rid of it, i would bathe her with only a handful of baking soda in the water, NO soaps, and dont rinse that area, just pat dry. only if her skin seems really dry, then maybe every other change, you might want to use some plain vaseline, or maybe some aquaphor. and no baby wipes.
It sounds like eczema to me. I would switch to all natural products. My favorite is California Baby. You can get the supersensitive line of baby bath/shampoo and lotion. They also carry a calendula cream that I use to clear up any dry patches like this- he had some rough spots on his elbows and his cheeks were getting a bit dry with the cold weather and they cleared right up. My husband had this mysterious allergy to something for almost a year that caused dry peeling skin around his eyes. We tried every cream under the sun and they would help for a bit and then it would come back. The only thing that worked was this California Baby Calendula Cream. I love it and I love that there are no chemicals in it like other so-called sensitive products like Cetaphil or Aveeno.

Look at the Cosmetics Safety Database and look at what is in the products you are using. It's pretty shocking when you do the research to find out what kinds of dangerous chemicals we are putting on our children.

Also make sure it's not your laundry detergent that is bothering her skin. Dreft is actually pretty harsh. I would try the 7th Generation baby laundry detergent, which is unscented and chemical free.

You said your daughter just started daycare do they provide diapers and wipes or do you? She could be having a reaction. Also in a childcare setting they use heavy duty cleaners and in some cases diluted bleach to clean the mats between diaper changes she may be having a reaction to the cleaner they are using. Does it improve on the weekends when she is home and then come back when she is in school? I was thinking also maybe eczema but I don't think that comes and goes that quickly. Good luck!!

My 15 month old daughter had a rash on her knee earlier in the week for about three days straight. My first instinct was that it was something she's eating. Gluten=free brownies == that was somethinng new. So, no moe brownies equals no more rash. It's gone!
When my son was 8 months old, he had eczema on his elbows. I had him tested for food sensitivities. He had a couple. I eliminated the food, and he's now 4 1/2 and hasn't had eczema since!
Maybe it's a new food that you introduced recently.

Sounds like Excema to me, which is very common with babies in the winter according to my doctor. She had suggested we use Aquafor which has typically worked well.
My son has dry skin on his legs since birth and the doc and my mother in law say it will go away on its own but to use moisturizer everyday. So we have tried many kinds and the best so far is by Baby Bliss. I have also heard that Mustela is great but we have not tried it yet. It looks reddish and feels bumpy but it is not bothering him, it bothers me. SO, the moral of the story is, you can leave it alone as long as she is not upset by it. Or you can try a good moisturizer (I use unscented) and use clear detergent on her clothes, and non scented dryer sheets, and we use dove unscented body wash in the tub. Very good for the skin, I use it too.

My daughter was a baby when I first noticed a rush like the one you are describing. The doctor said it is her dry skin and advised me to use Aveeno baby bath and buy Eucerin cream for dry skin. Sometimes it gets worse, and then I am to put Hydrocortisone. She is now 5 and the rush is coming back every now and then, especially during winter time. Now it is mostly on her hands, but sometimes also on her back or on the cheeks. I asked other doctors, but nobody is taking it seriously.
Is that eczema? Don’t know for sure how to call it, but it’s annoying.

try some organic rosehip seed oil. it works miracles for all kinds of skin irritations, took care of my daughter's excema in a couple of days.

I think you should take her to the doctor. They would give her a cream for it.
Is her skin dry? My baby had the same thing, but the rash was on her chest and a little bit on her tighs. Use plain vaseline, it's the best thing. Better than any cream, lotion etc. Bathe her in plain water only, the chemicals in cleansers have the effect of drying out baby skin. Same thing with lotions (especially if they're scented, like the Johnsons and Johnsons baby lotion -- don't use it). Bathe her in luke warm water, not very warm. Try to apply the vaseline every time you change her diaper, you should see a big difference after a few days. Oh, and after you bathe her, just pat her dry and then apply the vaseline while her skin is still somewhat wet. This helps retain the moisture in her skin.
I just took my 11 month old to the pediatrician for what seems like the same thing - he had it for a while then it started to look a little raw... I use only organic products including on his clothes, etc. The doctor gave me a low dose cortisone cream (it was rx) to use for JUST ONE WEEK... and then to use Aquaphor or Eucerin daily. He said it was from the cold combined with dry heat (we live in an old home with radiators)and just sensitive baby skin. Good luck!

I have a 9 month old also and what works best for her are the Aveeno products. I bathe her in the baby wash and put the diaper cream also. Now for her legs and for her face when it dries up I use baby Aquaphor ointment and it has worked wonders.
Just keep it lubricated as much as possible so that it doesn't get worse. Especially during the winter our skin dries up so babies with their sensitive skin gets worse.
