9 Month Old Naps

My 9 month old girl has been sleeping good at night from about 8PM until 6 or 6:30, but will sometimes wake up at 5 and I will nurse her and she will go back to sleep until 6:30. So our nights are pretty good. Around 10Am she will take about a 30 minute nap and seems content with that. Her afternoon nap is where my problem is. She usually goes down about 1:30 and will only sleep about 45 mins in her crib and she usually wakes up very unhappy. If I let her she will sleep on me for a hour or two. I have been letting this happen and want it to stop. How do I get her to stay sleeping in her crib? I can't stand having to lay on the couch with her sleeping on me when I could be getting so much done. I am open to try anything but my other issue is that my 3 1/2 year old is trying to nap in the room next to hers and I want to try to make his nap peaceful too. Thanks in advance for any input.

What can I do next?

i would start with an earlier bedtime around 7-7:30. this did help our daughter who had similar challenges with naps. also, try putting her down at the same time each day for naps. i learned to not run in when she first wakes up, and she now learned how to put herself back to sleep after that 45 min. time. this did take a few months...she's now 13 months. i know it's hard. my daughter still nurses a lot, and does so a couple times at night. we had to help her learn to fall asleep on her own and not on me since it was difficult to get anything done or a few minutes to myself.

good luck!

I completely agree with Lesley! Earlier bedtime (you might even get a later wakeup because of it!), and only let her sleep in the crib!

The two child issue is a doozy for lots of moms, because you don't want one waking up the other. Can you put a noise machine in your son's room for now, while your daughter learns to soothe herself back to sleep during her naps? My son often wakes up after 30-45 minutes, but he ALWAYS goes back to sleep if I let him be. Usually just a minute or two of chatting or fussing, then down for a solid 2 hour nap! But I don't have another child yet, so it's easy for me to talk...

Will she take a pacifier? Try to give it to her as soon as you hear her waking and see if that'll help her settle back down before she wakes up enough to want to get up and be held.

Only let her sleep in the crib whenever possible. She needs an earlier bedtime, then she will nap better during the day. Buy the book by Dr Marc Weissbluth: Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. It is excellent & addresses all of this!

Good luck!
