9 Month Old - Daily Milk Intake (In Addition to Solids)

My baby girl is 9 months old and has started to be finicky with her milk intake. She does great with solids at school, but it's a battle to get her to drink her bottles. How much milk is recommended for a 9 month old to be drinking when they're also eating solids? Right now, I nurse her in the mornings, she typically takes about a 7 ounce bottle around noon, and then will maybe drink 2-4 ounces in the afternoon and won't have milk again until right before bed, at which time she's nursed again. She does great with yogurt and other Stage 2 foods, but she's not eating non-pureed solids yet as she has no teeth and has not grasped the concept of gumming her food.

Thanks for the help!

So What Happened?

Thanks Dana! There's no way she eats that much food. I'm hoping it's more for the 12 month olds.. We go for our 9 month appt next week, so I'll talk to the dr. We'll see what percentile weight she falls into and if he's concerned! Thanks for the website! I'll add it to my faves.

Thanks everyone! I'm referring to breast milk. She hasn't had formula in a long time, but I'm about to have to re-introduce it to her as my milk supply is going down. Sounds like she's not abnormal in her milk intake. She's a petite girl - 17 pounds. I think that's pretty low in the weight percentile for her age/gender, but I'll find out for sure on Monday. Thanks again and I'll follow up after I talk to the Ped.

Here is a 1-day sample menu from the American Academy of Pediatrics for children ages 8-12 months and includes milk intake:

If your baby isn't taking well to her bottles, I'd call the pediatrician to see what they recommend to supplement the nutrition as best as possible and to offer suggestions on how to get her to take them better.

Just asked my Pedi this exact same question. I'm also nursing atleast twice a day, and my 9 month old isn't real good about taking formula. She said he should be getting about 20 oz per day, in addition to the solids. Sounds like you are right on track!

My daughter is 9 months old and her pediatrician says she needs 24 to 32oz per day. I give a a 6oz bottle in the morning, a 6oz bottle before bed and three 4oz bottles throughout the day.

Your baby is right on track. Some babies like mine stay on the lower end of milk intake but are just as healthy ...believe me my son in in the 90 percentile for height and his weight is in the 50 percentile. He never went past four 4oz bottles a day and he is a big boy : )

You are doing great by adding yogurt to her diet and later on mozzerella cheese sticks would be great too. My baby loves them and if you cut them into little bites they are soft enough for babies to knaw on them.

Do you mean she won't drink cow's milk or your milk? Milk is the most common allergen.
