Hello..I am completely at a loss here. My 9 month old crys at everyone who is not mommy, daddy, or her regular day sitter. i do mean everyone. I know children this age go through seperation anxiety but she has done this since day one. She crys at the sitters when other kids get picked up when the parents try to talk to her. She will cry the entire time we are gone IF we go out at night. Any suggestions? The only time she does not cry at people is when she is in her own home and they ignore her or we are holding her. It makes it very difficult to find a sitter who you trust and can handle the constant crying 9 month old and an active 4 year old.

What can I do next?

That sounds miserable! If it is any consolation, I have heard endless stories of me behaving the exact same way as a baby, and I grew out of it as soon as I could walk. I've heard that inconsolable babies grow up to be patient and easy-going kids and adults. Probably an old wives' tale, but maybe!!

That is completely normal for that age. BUT my suggestion is to get your daughter a "buddy" - a dolly, a teddy bear, something soft/snuggly.

When our first was in a daycare center, we brought in a teddy bear one day, and they said they couldn't take it away from her because she'd scream - they'd "never seen a child take to a teddy bear that early and that quickly". A friend of ours gave our daughter a purple teddy bear at one point, and it hasn't left her side since.

Our youngest has a dolly and a "ming ming" (the duck from wonder pets, a show on noggin or something). She carries them around, and particularly wants them when we're getting ready to leave her at the sitter's in the morning.

Anyway - good luck!

My daughter is 8 months old now, and she does pretty much the same thing. Some days even her daddy can't hold her. She only wants me, no one else. It is extremely frustrating. There are times I want a break and I can not give her to someone else. If I go to the store she will cry the entire time I am gone. It is terrible to be out somewhere and know that your baby is at home screaming for you. I know how you feel!

I really don't have any advice for how to change this. Nothing has worked for me. I am just hoping that she outgrows it. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. Good luck to you!

My daughter was like this. She did not want anyone to hold her but me, not even daddy. She would cry for hours when we left her with my in-laws (and they saw her 3 times a week) until she fell asleep. My mother-in-law bought a bouncy chair that vibrated and that was the only place she would sit and not cry. She was like this from pretty young 4-5 months until she was about 12-13 months. It was terrible. My daughter is now a social butterfly at 3 and talks to almost anyone.

Your daughter will out grow it. Just hang on you will make it through.

Between 9 and 18 months most children go to separation anxiety. It happens again between 2 and 3. Not much you can do except be there as much as possible and not use strangers for child care.

Two words: Stranger Anxiety. It is normal and will pass. Don't worry!

We're at 11 months and just started this as well... I've been told not to worry, just a normal period of growth for a child to become a "mommy's buddy". As far as the autism - hmmmm... never heard of this as a sign for a child this age and even when I got my masters in human development, it was never mentioned. I wouldn't worry about being autistic either... unless there are other very noticeable signs.

My 1 1/2 year old granddaughter did the same thing but started coming out of it once she started walking so there is hope that this too will pass.
Just be patient.
