9 Mo Old Suddenly Refuses Milk

Hi all,
My 9 month old is exclusively breast fed, takes solids, and is given expressed breast milk at daycare. She's been known to drink up to 16oz in one 8-hour period but over the last two weeks she will drink only 2-5 oz/day. It seems she will not take a bottle. She nurses like a champ still but seems to be over the bottle phase. She will not take my milk in a sippy-cup either. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I agree, this is not necessarily a problem. Is there any way you can nurse her at lunchtime? Otherwise, as long as you nurse her as much as she wants when you are with her, including at night, and she is offered a variety of good healthy foods, she should be fine.

I recommend talking to a lactation consultant. At 9 months they still need the same amount of breast milk as before, to get their best nutrition and benefits, it is the amount of food that should vary. Kaiser has full time lactation nurses, and most other hospitals with birthing centers do also. One thing you might want to do is schedule the food for her at the daycare. I know that at ours, they would give my son food about 30 minutes before he was scheduled for a bottle. He'd drink an ounce or two of expressed milk, and they'd toss the rest. Ouch. Pumping is hard, and good for you for keeping it up. Your milk is so good for your baby!

Once babies start eating solid food they need less milk. Since she is drinking milk at daycare and is still nursing I would not be concerned. This is another one of "those transitions." smile

My one-year old also stopped taking a bottle with breast milk around 8-9 months of age. She still breast feeds, but didn't want a bottle or often not milk in a sippy cup. One way we still got breast milk into her diet was to make oatmeal for one or more meals and mix it with breast milk instead of water. That adds several ounces.

There are several different cups out there. My kids always preferred a certain one. Buy a few differnt styles and try those. My doctor also recommended starting a sippy cup between 5 & 6 months old. Maybe call your dr and see what advice they can give.

My son at that age ate a lot of plain yogurt. It just slips down the throat. You can add mashed fruit and honey if you want to flavor it. I tried to give him flavored yogurt, but he would have nothing to do with it. He ate it morning, noon, and night.
