9 Days of up and down Fever

My 2 1/2 year old son is on day nine of having a fever - it goes from low (100) to high (103). His only other symptom is diarrhea that also comes and goes. He has been to the doctor twice - they don't know - think its probably viral. When given Tylenol or ibuprofen he acts totally normal, but when the fever comes back he becomes whiney and lethargic. I am just wondering if anyone else has had this happen with their child and what they did.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Fever got to 104.3 last night - the doctor is requseting a stool sample - not a fun thing to try to get from a 2 year old :). He does not have any sores so the doctors are sure it isn't HFM. Thanks for the support.

I agree with Dawn that it could be foot n mouth, it is viral and will work its way out. The fever lasts for about 7-10 days and my oldest DD never got the blisters but it was long rough patch...keep pushing fluids, even popsicles, jello, whatever you can keep in him and do the alternating motrin (8 hrs) and tylenol (4hrs). Hang in there mom!

This did happen to my daughter, but it only lasted about 7 days. It turned out to be a virus, I can only assume b/c it magically went away ;), which was what everyone suspected but it's nerve wracking to be in the middle of it, especailly for so long! I would give it another day or two, it sometimes takes 10 days, which seems like forever, I know! If you've already been to the doctor twice, it seems that they aren't overly concerned as of yet. If he doesn't kick it within another day or so though, I'd probably go back again. Hang in there!

He could have also developed a food allergy. This happened to my son. Similar symptoms.

Does he have any blisters in his mouth or in between his fingers or toes? Or around his diaper area? He may have Hand Foot Mouth...just a guess as he has such high temps. My guys had it (one twice!), and one had a mild case, but my guy that had it twice had a severe case the first time and mild the second. I did not even know they both had it at the same time as it was such a different experience than the horrible first round with my guy who had it twice. They get very whiney and lethargic while having not much interest in food. Once the motrin kicked in, they were good for a few hours. It is supposed to last anywhere from 3-14 days, and if they have blisters (which are EXTREMELY painful) the pain can last up to 10 :( days. I don't know if this helps, but it may be the answer to what is up. Did I mention there is no cure for H/F/M, only motrin for pain... :(
Good Luck to you all!!

My 15 mos. old son had a fever (no diarrhea) like that over the winter. About 10 days, spiked up to 104 + a couple of times. I was pretty scared, but then it just went away. Hopefully that's what happens to your son in a couple of days!
