9-Month-old Having Trouble Sleeping

My 9-month-old has never been a great sleeper, but for the past few weeks off and on he's been waking up at night every 2 to 3 hours and SCREAMING even if we feed him, rock him, bring him in bed with us, give him mylicon, ibuprofen (he's been teething), teething tablets, change his diaper, etc. He'll be up for an hour or more and then finally calms down and gets back to sleep. I've tried letting him cry it out and he will eventually get back to sleep, but I don't feel like it's that he just wants us because when I go to him and sit with him or feed him he still seems really uncomfortable-flailing his arms, arching his back, swing his legs. I thought I had eaten too much chocolate at Easter, so I stopped with that and it helped for a night or 2 and then it happened again. Then I realized I had been giving him these little alphabet whole grain noodles. I stopped and he slept really well one night and day and then it was right back to it. I just really want to know if anybody has experienced anything similar. I'm thinking it may be a food intolerance. If anyone out there had an infant with food intolerance, what were the symptoms?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your responses, they've really helped. I forgot to put in my original post that it was not an ear infection (that had been my thought too). We were at the dr due to a viral rash and he checked out fine. I am also leaning toward teething except that I decided to stop all "table" food and I've just been giving him mixed grain Earth's Best baby cereal and fruits and veggies and for the past 3 nights he's absolutely fine. He always gets up once, but eats and goes right back to sleep. I'm going to slowly introduce other foods (today is brown rice) to see if it seems like it's a reaction to food. I'll keep you all updated. Thanks again!

I wish I could help you. I feel I have been helped by the responses here. My problem is my dd wakes up to nurse, same as normal, but after 1/2 hour or so (depends if I have fallen asleep) I notice she is sleeping. I try to get her to stop sucking and she either wakes up right then or as I lay her back down. She has ended up in bed with me several nights now. Can't help it, I can't stay awake, I'm exhausted.
Have also noticed she is a lot more fussy during the day, we are thinking teething. But after reading other responses I think I will keep a diary of what I eat and what she eats, see if there is any food intolerance issue. Her feces have changed, but at first we figured she had gotten the same bug I had, diarrhea etc. Now I realize maybe I need to watch what she eats. She is so picky, has only been eating jarred baby food and I can't get her to eat hardly any homemade food. I bought a magic bullet because I thought the baby food grinder wasn't getting it fine enough. Still no go. But maybe what I have gotten her to eat is what is bothering her. Will have to check. You mentioned the flailing and the arching, I just thought dd was showing her temper, maybe she is in pain?
I still don't get in your situation why things seemed to go better and then go back worse.
I hope things get better for you.

do not give the baby chocolate, honey, nuts or anything of that nature until they are at least a year old. he should be eating some yogurt at this point. if you are breast feeding be careful what you eat since this will go to him through the breast milk. the teething part is a monster. they hylands teething tablets are awesome. do his legs in a bicycle motion and up and down to get rid of gas and the milycon like you are doing. give him tylenol instead of ibuprophen unless he has a high fever. is he going poop alright? may be give him a warm bath before bed. this will relax him.

Food intolerance will/can display in change in fecal.
some allergy/intolerances can be simply ruled out with a blood test. Some don't show until after 2 yr. some you need to weed through by elimination or introduction.

Teething is a tough time. Some Lavender sachets in the room to create a soothing environment. I would completely skip the chocolate. The caffine will disrupt the sleep -- I know it does mine.

Hi H.!
Ugh, that's rough! Have you considered an ear infection? They tend to bother them more when they're sleeping. Whatever it is, I hope your little one feels better soon.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was the teething. It just seems to bother them so much more at night. My ped. said that it was ok to alternate the ibuprofen and tylenol (just make sure you're not giving either too often-- I keep a dosing schedule on a white board so I can keep track at 2 am of when he's had what). I know a lot of people who like the Hyland's teething tabs but they've never worked for us.

This will pass. Try to keep the night time interactions as low-key and "unfun" as possible. I'm not in anyway a believer in letting a baby suffer alone, but you also don't want to set up bad habits. If in a couple of weeks it's not better, I'd check with the pediatrician.

Good luck. Night wakings are hard on everyone!

My son acted like this mostly at night. He had reflux. Mylicon helped very little with him. Motrin can trigger upset stomach sometimes. You could try elevating his crib or keeping him upright 20 mins after feeding. I used the swing. one next to the bed and couch. What ever it is I hope you find out soon. For your sake and his. Good luck.

Didn't have a problem with my youngest (now 16) unless I ate brocolli or cauliflower.
My firend however found her son was allergic to anything with soy in it. Another friend's child had to go gluten free - which kinda sounds like what you are describing - it is something to check into. For starters, write down eveything your child does, what time it is, etc. This can help drs. pin point where the problem is. In the mean time - if it is like a colic, try a warm towel on the belly - it did wonders for my baby.
