i would J. throw 20 in a card if anything
What is a good gift to give for my neice?
What do you normally give?
What kind of gifts did your kids receive that they liked or showed interest in?
What was their favorite?

First, to answer your question, I have a graduating 8th grader.
ITunes gift cards like the other mom said are great.
Also, Amazon gift cards, or even Coldstone Creamery is very well liked in our family.
Since we aren't super well off, for my son's 8th grade graduation, my mom is paying a portion of what it costs for my son to attend our church's summer camp on a houseboat for the incoming high schoolers, which he is very excited about.
I do not agree with the other moms that 8th grade graduation is "just" a promotion. In this day and age, and especially living where we live, for some kids 8th grade graduation is the only time they WILL graduate. At our local public high school there is a 40% or more drop out rate, so sad, so 8th grade graduation is a really big deal.
(Which is why my kids are either in charter schools in another town or homeschooled! But that's another topic.)
Not to mention, that most kids I know these days agree that jr high is harder than high school, workload wise. So I think it's time to celebrate :)
And how nice of you to give your niece a gift!
I gave my oldest boy who graduated from 8th grade, a $15 iTunes gift card.
I don't do 8th grade graduations. To me, its a little silly. They are moving to the 9th grade. I go all out for HS and College graduations!
I will celebrate 8th grade graduation but since it is not a real graduation I do not do gifts. My kids have no received gifts.
It may be called a graduation but it is really a celebration.
I have given cards but never a gift. Can you tell this is a sore subject for me.
8th grade is technically a "promotion" not a graduation (at least at my school :)
But a small token or gift is in order if you have been invited to celebrate. Depends how close you are and what her interests are. A gift card to some place she likes or for something fun to do this summer could work, or nice small adult piece of jewelry she can always remember as "the bracelet she got from Aunt Mickey for 8th grade promotion"
I always liked recieving jewelty and gift cards as a teen.
