My great uncle is turning 80 in Feb and my husband and I will be throwing a suprise birthday for him. We are trying to decide on a cool theme for the party...Any Ideas! He's a young classy 80 (like lives by himself, still get around like he was 60)!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Do a theme from his era. I did this when my dad turn 80 - gathered pics of his lifetime from youth all the way up and put it on a DVD slide show, taped people's comments and had his favorite foods, music, etc. He loved it--didn't know that was the last birthday we would have with him, but make the most of that birthday party you have for your uncle and have fun...

For parties like these, there always tend to be people who can't come. If that's the case for you, and you have time, here's what I did. I e-mailed/called/wrote and let people know that we are doing the surprise party. I asked them to send ME a card for the person, or a letter- told them we were putting together a scrapbook of these, so write some nice memories of the person. Most people sent really nice notes. And I did make a really nice scrapbook which was ready at the time of the party. Every time, the guest of honor LOVED looking through it.

What is it with surprise parties for the elderly? My family did it to my grandmother at 80 and my DH's side did one for his great aunt. Both survived, but in retrospect I think maybe it wasn't a brilliant idea for my grandmom b/c she has a heart condition.

Well...what is he into? Go with that. Play music he likes. My grandmother's party was at the church so it was more of a simple luncheon with a big cake (that my cousin, who is a pastry chef, made). DH's great-aunt had her party in a restaurant.

Beenthere has some great ideas. Snapfish, Personalizationmall.com and Etsy may be your friend in this.

1950s? Its easy to find costumes and folk of all ages like it. If he is black--I would do a 1960s party. We love the afros and bell bottoms. But, either decade is fun! Bless you for doing that for an uncle!
