This might not be helpful at all but I had a tonsillectomy when I was a child and what I remember most is that my dad giving me smashed up popsicle mixed with 7-up to help make my throat feel better (I guess this was before the slushie came to our town). If I recall correctly my recovery time was 2-3 days. Lots of fluids and if he is willing have him gargle with salt water.

Tips for you....(because you have been given lots of hints on how to help your little guy).....do all the shopping for several days today. That way you don't have to go out. I agree on avioding the "red" foods (anything that has red dye or similar dyes, as it is hard to tell if it is blood or the dye. Stock up on the foods that your little guy likes and would be easy for him to eat now, and then you can relax while he recovers. And I would have to say amen to each of the previous posters....all great advice. Good luck to you.

we were told to try feed the child pretty much right away to strengthen throat muscles. so after i brought her from hospital, she had veggie soup. that day I kept giving her foods that required chewing but not crunchy. avoid 'red' foods because you need to know if there is any bleeding. give the tylenol round the clock for first 24 hrs even if there is no pain. if you don't, and if pain occurs it will be bad. we were told 10th day can be the worse (yes, tenth), because chances are bleeding can occur. it did, right on the 10th day. nothing major but we had to take her to see the ENT. all in all, my daughter was 4 when she had this done and she did great. you will also be told to 'take it easy' for 14 days. even if your child seems completely recovered. listen to this, don't take him out in cold air (it will dry the throat etc). we kept her inside for 14 days, little outings (house, car, indoor place only).
good luck
ps popsickle as much as he can eat

My dd had hers out at 4.

Lots of fluids. slushies and popsicles would be great . My dd was told to refrain from drinking milk (maybe because of the bacteria present in milk). Mine hanged out with her water bottle.

I received advices to use a food processor for meals too. Did really have to do that with mine though.

They do bounce pretty fast. About 3 days and mine was pretty much her old self.

when my daughter had hers out she really liked eating KFC mashed potatoes and gravy. They didn't hurt going down and were filling. I personally thought it was much easier and she recovered quicker than the several bouts of tonsillitis she went through before we finally decided to have them removed. Good luck!

I had mine out when I was 4 and it sucked (spoken from a true perspective of a 4 yr old LOL) I say to make him feel better and maybe a bit more at ease what if you took him shopping and let him pick out all the fun and not so good stuff that he gets to eat after he comes home. Let him fill the cart with ice cream and jello and pudding and popcicles. You could maybe even grab a new board game that you two could play together while he is home recovering or a new video game if he plays that.
Good Luck and Im sure he will do just great
