I have an 8yr old boy, who, in the past couple of days, has had and EXTREME fear of bugs. He thinks bugs are crawling on him. He says he sees them flying around. He is constantly swatting at himself and looking on the floor to see if he finds one. He has come home from school "needing a bath" and I ve caught him several times in the bathroom shaking out his clothes to make sure nothings in them. He hasnt been eating much because he thinks bugs are in his food.

I have tried to talk to him and have asked if he had seen anything recently that may have triggered this or if anyone was harming or teasing him with bugs...he says no. He says he doesnt know why he is scared. He says he feels "creepy crawly". This is even affecting his sleep. He is constantly checking his blanket and pillows...

Im very concered. I just want my child to have peace. If someone has ever experienced this, please respond.

So What Happened?

He is not on any meds at all. I just got a call from his teacher, and she has informed me that yet again, he hasnt eaten anything. So I made an appt. with the Doc. for tomorrow. I deff. need to rule out any physical problems first. For this fear to seem to happen overnight and effect his quality of life within a couple of days is extremely concerning.

I'd take him to a doctor asap.

I would suggest taking him to the doctor for a checkup. While there is arachnophobia, there is also a skin (or maybe it is a blood condition, not sure which) that makes you feel like things are crawling on you. A friend of mine had this when she was 18 or so. She used some kind of medicine for a few years and it went away. Maybe that is what your son is experiencing. I am not sure if it was a deficiency or some kind of skin issue but worth looking into.

Hi C.
I was woundering if he is on any medication? Because some meds can effect a person that way if the dose is to high for the person.
I would talk to your doc about this. And see if he or she would have any suggestions.

It certainly sounds like low blood sugar. When mine gets low, I see black spots floating all around. I am sure that could freak out any child!

I would go to the doctors with him. I have arachnaphobia(fear of spiders) really bad and i tend to have nights where i toss and turn really bad thinking that i feel spiders or something on me. Its not fun. Makes me feel super bad for him. I could cry for him. I almost passed out a week ago when a spider was on my hand while i was sitting in the grass with my 9mth old daughter. I couldnt breathe or anything. Its not fun!!! He might really have a phobia or something. It also maybe something way different, doctor is the best bet. Good luck and i look forward to what is up if you could update us that would be great as long as it isnt something too personal. I wouldnt want you to feel uncomfortable either. Good Luck. Hope all is well.
